Sorry, I didn't think a HS diploma was part of a basic background check. We are desperate for warm body's that can pass a piss test. My advice was given to someone who wants to start tomorrow. I'm my world a clean DL and SS are the first steps to work. I can definitly pass a piss test. Im not certain on this but i was told that a g.e.d. is just as well as a high school diploma anyways. In all the fields I've worked since I left the Navy that was true. I did eventually go back to college and earn a masters in accounting, but then as an accountant I sorta needed that!

I believe that Klipsch speakers Classic line is still made in Hope. It should be an interesting place to work.

Get married first then worry about a profession. Having healthy children and a loving marriage is real success.

You’ve got a good start, you know you need an education. Be honest and upfront, you don’t know, you don’t know. Young folks a lot of them don’t want to work with their hands, big shortage in the trades. Give it all you’ve got, and save some for your family, they can help you get thru a rough patch.

Well just an update on my end. I'm working the same job though I've worked up the ranks and became a sort of lead and make 3$ more an hour. That is just to get me thru until I can make it up to the community college in the spring and take an accu-placer test to see if I'm eligible for any Grants or scholarships. Then I'll make a decision from there. If no grants or scholarships are available maybe I can go to a tech school or just get lucky walking into places and being honest.

At the very least you are eligible for PELL grants, they are (or were) federal grants that require only that you can take the course for credit, no tests to take. Though I am sure the college will want you to test so they can put you in classes you can succeed at.

I'll throw my 2 cents in for what it's worth. I was in a similar boat, years ago, and wound up joining the Army. I suggest you NOT do that. While it gave me a mountain of skills, taught me a metric shite ton about dealing with adversity, and eventually landed me a full ride to college, it also landed me with a disability check, and nearly cost me my family more than a few times.
When I got out I started to go to school for IT, which I didn't enjoy, so I switched to business. Took a job at O'Reilly slinging parts. They paid a whopping 8 bucks and hour. From there I moved over to bottom guy on the parts counter at a school bus dealership. That was in August of 2016. I am now the regional parts manager over 2 states.
Work hard. Plenty of these guys have given all this advice already, but be early (in the army it was 10 min. prior for everything, that's a good rule), be respectful, take initiative, volunteer for things, and don't lose sight of your own goals.
If all that fails, PM me. I may be looking to hire someone up your way in the next year or so.

I was talking to my neighbor today about his job installing commercial sound systems and alarms, and he said that he has the same problem as my nephew who is in the same business, along with fire detection and alarms. They can't hire anyone that will stay more than 2 days. No one wants to work anymore. They will train anyone who shows up and they make a really good living.
