I am going to buy a Brebbia Churchwarden on the first of Sept. This pipe is not preconditioned from the factory with the inside of the bowl being bare wood & not the standard black. So how do I break it in if at all - if I decide to smoke it, since it looks too beautiful to smoke. It will be my 7th wizard Churchwarden Lol ๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ

I coat new bowls with a tiny dab of honey in the belief that the honey creates a harder cake. Maybe its does maybe it does not. I make sure to smoke any new pipe very slowly being extra careful not to smoke to hot.

I load and smoke just as I do any other pipe. So far, so good.

Find a good non aromatic Burley pack it just right then put a match to it tamp it lightly the use another match to add a touch more embers. Then enjoy.
Or if you want cut a chunk if cotton bole twist cram it in to the bowl then spark it with a match or two. Sit back and smoke.

I just load it up and smoke it. I mainly smoke pipes I make, and I haven't used a bowl coating on any of them. I don't think there's any special way to go about it.

Reading thru this thread, I see there is no special way to smoke an untreated bowl. Sounds like I just have to baby it and let it treat itself over time. I may not smoke it for a good while, but if I do itโs no big deal to break it in. Thanks guys for your input. ๐๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ

Load and smoke. I've heard people say to break a pipe in with Burley, but I break them in with anything but aromatics.

Well my new Brebbia had some manufacturing errors so I sent it back to Tobbacopipes, com for another pipe-the same style. Tobaccopipes said to box it up and send it back to us and weโll send you another one just like it. I told them to be sure to do some quality control on it before it goes out the door. Now I sit and wait hoping that the one they send me has no errors from the factory. Will keep you all posted about it. Wish me luck.๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ

I hope the replacement is better quality.

Yes so do I, thank you for saying. Itโs such a beautiful pipe, that seeing it each day displayed in my pipe area, Bummed me out. So Iโm glad I sent it back so I will get another one just like it. The stem (when looking Inside the bowl) leaned to the left cuz the air/tenden insertion hole, was factory drilled cricked.๐ฒ whish me luck ๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ

They have to sell their inventory in stock. Some won't notice off center drilling, some won't care. For those that do, they have a good reputation and as you report, will exchange it.

That's a nice looking pipe and I think a lot of money for a churchwarden. I have been dissatisfied with my first two churchwardens that were over $100. The new old stock London Made Craftsman from the 60s is fantastic and it was $35. I don't know why they charge so much for a small bowl on a long stem. The stems on the high dollar pipes aren't anything to brag about.

Marketing comes into play as well, with those LOTR inspired pipes, the Vauen Auenland series as an example @$250.00.

Tobaccopipes.com did me all right, and I am happy with it ๐๐๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ

I just broke it in last night. Found some burley and filled half way. I lit it and enjoyed it. A smooth smoker with few re-lights. Does not get too hot and it was easy to clean. Overall, l do like it.๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ
