I suppose I need to balance out my other thread on what we like about cobs with a thread on briar...
What's your favourite thing about briar pipes?
For me it's the aesthetics. You can't beat a briar pipe for looking like what a pipe should look like (imo). Some briar pipes are simply stunning. You don't get that with a cob (again, imo).
What about everyone else?

Aesthetics, yes. But also durability for a working man. Meerschaums and cobs just won't stand up to saddle bags, glove boxes, jacket pockets etc. like a good briar. Meers make beautiful heirlooms, but they pretty much have to be coddled their whole life. And cobs seem to me to almost be disposable pipes.

I like the feel and heft of a briar depending on the size and they are usually great smoking pipes when broken in properly.

The taste of new or freshly cleaned briar. The weight or lack there of. Durability. The choice of stems. Patterns in the grain or the blast. Heck everything about a briar pipe rocks from the history of the makers to figuring out how old they might be.

A child of the 60’s-70’s everyone I knew that smoked pipes, and virtually 95% of everyone in movies and shows smoked briar pipes. That has briar ingrained into my grey matter of what a pipe is. As others said, the grain and the shapes that you can get with briar are eye pleasing, and far exceed meers and cobs in the shapes that are available.
No canadian meers that I know of, or lovat cobs... just wouldn’t look right.

Elegance, plain and simple. I've never forgotten that photo of Hugh Hefner walking down the stairs at Playboy mansion with his silk robe and a Dunhill clenched between his teeth. And a woman on each arm. Now seriously, can you picture him doing the same with a cob in his mouth? Perhaps this also addresses Josh's wood point.

They're cool looking, for the most part, and durable. Artisan carvers can turn a block of briar into a piece of functional art that's astounding to look at. It's amazing that you find briars from the 1800s that are still completely functional as smoking devices. Briar pipes are also nostalgic, classy, exude a quiet wisdom, and even a friendly nature.

Not much you can do to a cob that can't be un-done with some 200 grit paper
