I just like collecting briar pipes. I like holding them in my hand. I like hand-cut stems. And I like precious metal mountings. As far as the practical smoking properties, aside from stem/button work, I'm not at all sure that a briar is an important improvement over a cob. A cob smokes awful well.

Aesthetics, yes. But also durability for a working man. Meerschaums and cobs just won't stand up to saddle bags, glove boxes, jacket pockets etc. like a good briar. Meers make beautiful heirlooms, but they pretty much have to be coddled their whole life. And cobs seem to me to almost be disposable pipes. Cobs are pretty tough stuff.
Not much you can do to a cob that can't be un-done with some 200 grit paper
I'll be the first to admit that my opinions and perceptions on this particular subject are made from a distance, I've never owned or smoked a cobb

The low price and high durability are just free bonuses

Have to agree with just about everything said about briar and there is nothing I can add.

I like the feel and looks of a rough finish briar pipe but I like smooth cross grain pipes that show birds eye on sides of bowl. I have a few pipes where I can see the birds eye swell and shrink as the bowl heats and cools and some of my smooth pipes look wet on the surface when burley is smoked through it.

They're cool looking, for the most part, and durable. Artisan carvers can turn a block of briar into a piece of functional art that's astounding to look at. It's amazing that you find briars from the 1800s that are still completely functional as smoking devices. Briar pipes are also nostalgic, classy, exude a quiet wisdom, and even a friendly nature. This is 100% true and philosophy at the same time. Well said!
