Something for the winter blues. I think this is one of the most beautiful ballads I've ever heard.

Oscar Emmanuel Peterson was easily the best jazz pianist of the 20th century, and, perhaps, the best this world has ever seen. Although given to spasms of technical virtuosity (just because he could) which, at times, may have detracted from his genius, the man could swing! Want proof? Just take a listen to his version of "Tenderly" recorded in Brussels, Belgium in 1957. It was was performed by my favorite Peterson trio which included Herb Ellis (guitar) and Ray Brown (bass). Mr. Peterson was also good friends with Count Basie, and if you've never had the pleasure of hearing them play together, then allow me to recommend their "Satch and Josh" and "Night Rider" albums. Finally, for your auditory and visual enjoyment click on this link ( Slow Blues). These giants were genuinely enjoying each other's musical company. What a shame they grew old and passed...

Incidentally, Mr. Peterson was a pipe-smoker. On the cover of his "My Favorite Instrument" CD he is shown smoking what appears to be a Horry Jamieson GBD Unique.
