Ultimately any of these methods will work.
The idea is to use a solvent of some sort to dissolve the tar and stick around long enough to let you transfer said tar to a pipe cleaner before evaporating and leaving no trace.
Denatured ethanol, everclear, vodka, isopropyl alcohol, water, hell even Diet Coke will all do the job with varying degrees of efficiency.
The point is that the solvent evaporates.
However, many solvents will also cut the wax on the finish and remove the pigment. So restrict your solvent use to the inside of the pipe unless you want to refinish it.

I've only used Jack Daniels to clean mine...but it does leave behind a flavour. After the first puff though, that flavour disappears and all I taste is the smoke. Darn it all.
