Greetings,
Newish enthusiast with a question.
I clean my pipes after each use with 91% Isopropyl alcohol, and let them sit at least 8 hours.
I understand most of you use pipe cleaners or a similar method after each smoke, but is using the Iso this often excessive? Could it be even harmful for my briars? What about my Missouri - m's? It is such a thorough cleaning that I enjoy a fresh taste each session.
Thanks in advance. Better safe than sorry here.

Yes, that is excessive and is harmful for the and probably even you. You should only clean after a period of time of many smokes. Othersfeel its best only if a pipe goes sour. Isopropyl alcohol also has a chemical additive. The only alcohol you should be cleaning your pipes with is something strong like a whiskey, bourbon, rum or probably the best for purity, grain alcohol like Everclear.

Cleaning with alcohol after every smoke is unnecessary.
I only get out the alcohol if a pipe has gone "sour" on me, and that only happens if I have been less than diligent about day-to-day cleaning with pipe cleaners.

Isopropyl alcohol usually has no "additives" because it needs none. Denatured alcohol is ethyl alcohol with additives to prevent you from drinking it.
Isopropyl alcohol is no more or less toxic than ethyl alcohol, but it has no pleasant intoxicating effects, so there's no need to add anything. Drinking it will just make you feel ill.

Oh I definitely do not use Denatured alcohol -- that would be very nasty for me. If i should use rum, bourbon, etc. which type is adequate? Everclear is forbidden now in California. Can't find it anywhere. Please give me an alcohol % and brand of liquor and I'll go that route instead. Also, I take it just pipe cleaners alone sounds fine between smokes until I feel a bite and need for the Rum, correct? Thanks everyone this is helpful so far.

Anything on the strong side will do. Some use vodka, some use whiskey, rum, etc... it's really up to you. It still doesnt need cleaned like that after every smoke.

I use isopropyl alcohol from the drug store. It's cheap and doesn't leave anything behind.

I use either Everclear or whatever single malt I have at hand. I only use the alcohol when I deem it necessary, which is not often. I do use three pipe cleaners after each smoke; a regular for the stem, a bristle for the shank, and a fluffy for the shank and folded over to scrub out the bowl. That process seems to work fine for me. Years ago, decades actually, when I did my first round of pipe smoking I used a pipe cleaner only when the performance of the pipe degraded significantly; I wouldn't recommend that process! My pipes became sour tasting after months of smoking and the only thing that cured them was smoking straight Latakia, now that's a trip.

In thirty years I've never used alcohol on pipes that were purchased unsmoked. Estate pipes were cleaned with isopropyl, and SPC uses denatured on their estates.

Only when a pipe gets rank do I do the alcohol thing but I don't smoke any Burley or Aro's so I rarely have much problems with just a cleaner and a days rest with my pipes. Been doing it like this for 50+ years and it works for me. I adhere to the K.I.S.S. principal

Been doing it like this for 50+ years and it works for me. I adhere to the K.I.S.S. principal I smoke a lot of Burley and aromatics and my pipes don't get rank/sour unless I mistreat them.
I give a pipe the once-through with pipe cleaners after every single smoke. I try to let pipes sit for a day after a day on which I've smoked'em. (i.e. I will smoke one pipe more than once a day, but I try and give it a day afterwards)
When I violate these rules, sometimes a pipe goes sour on me.
I suspect other folks have got other rules. Maybe I am excessive.

I gotta email them to confirm, because that's kinda messed up.

This actually makes me feel a lot better.
The post from rcstan has a link to the MSDS for their specific denatured alcohol. Their supplier uses methanol for the denaturing agent, instead of a bitterant. That should evaporate even faster than the ethyl alcohol.
I still would rather not handle denatured alcohol in my house, but in this case, it's not going to leave anything nasty in the pipe.

Greetings. Another related question -- I saw a youtuber ( Muttnchop Piper) that I follow and he mixes grain alcohol with a sweet liquor for his daily cleaning. Have any of you done this? Since I normally use 91% ISO, could that be mixed with the liquor?
I used to simply use Everclear, but it is now illegal to sell in California.

I use diet coke to clean my pipes because that is what is in the glass. Followed by a few dry pipe cleaners. I suppose it is less of cleaner and more of a sweetener. But for serious cleaning I normally pick whatever I want. Be it rum, whiskey, bourbon, scotch some for the pipe and more for me. Adding a high ISO would just increase drying time. Lots of folks use salt and spirits for a deep cleaning but God help you if you leave it in too long as it turns to rock. I have come to prefer the good ol cotton ball. Once the pipe is clean it is easy to keep clean by using pipe cleaners and paper towel in the bowl like a cork screw after each smoke. Everyone has their way and really non are right or wrong. So just find one that makes you happy and that you feel your pipe is clean and sanitary.

I use Everclear on estate pipes. If that's not available, rum or boubon will do. I personally would never use isopropyl alcohol on my pipes.

I’m curious as to why I never see vodka mentioned as a possible cleaning solution. I use everclear which I purchased specifically just to clan pipes with, vodka would have been my second choice if it had not been available. Maybe it’s just that none of us drink it because we have the clearly superior whisky sitting around 😁

Because Vodka is used to clean olives and I don't think we have any Russians here. Vodka starts out 190 proof and I have had some from Russia that was like moonshine.

Anything else leaves moisture and attracts more water before it evaporates.

I figured using the highest proof you have available is the way to go, but folks using whiskeys are using something that is around the same percentage of alcohol as most vodkas and it's going to leave behind additional flavors. Or is that the point? Maybe I need to give a pipe a cleaning with bourbon for science.

I clean each pipe after each use. Mechanically (pipe cleaners and tissues only, no alcohol or solvents) and thoroughly (take apart). I think (I don't know) that if you clean a pipe after each use it will never get funky. It takes build up to get funky, I am guessing.
Something like brushing teeth. I just do it.
The secret is (you guys are going to love this) to get more than one each of the pipes you love. So I can move from one Savinelli 320EX right on to the second 320EX, getting my two bowls in. I put each smoked pipe in the "to be cleaned" area of my desk, and once a week I get after it. The cleaned pipes are put away and ready to be smoked.

I use 151 rum because it sweetens the pipe. I use Everclear for really dirty pipes. I have used cask strength bourbon in a pinch.

I've only used Jack Daniels to clean mine...but it does leave behind a flavour. After the first puff though, that flavour disappears and all I taste is the smoke.

Throwing this out, on another forum a well respected piper has told the World he uses hot water, I’ve tried it and it works, I’ve studied a study of Briar absorbing rate of water and it is almost nil. Try it you might like.
