At Big Sticks in Mesa... Greetings everyone! We trust that many of you are doing well, and able to find a place to enjoy the pipe during the tail end of summer, fall is right around the corner, and it will be nice to close out the books on another Sonoran summer. The Pipe club meeting will take place on Saturday the 14th at 1 PM at big sticks, at which we will have our first slow smoke contest. If you are unfamiliar with what it is about, you can familiarize yourself with the official rules of the UPCA, to understand how it works, but this will not be a sanctioned event for several reasons. s3.amazonaws.com/ClubExpressClubFiles/90797/documents/UPCA-Contest-Rules_651029203.pdf?AWSAccessKeyId=AKIAIB6I23VLJX7E4J7Q&Expires=1567727860&response-content-disposition=inline%3B%20filename%3DUPCA-Contest-Rules.pdf&Signature=HPdN23rXbiDn6xH%2BIcBwUU6cNEg%3D1. The UPCA requires a notification a couple months ahead 2. A briar pipe is required, we will be using the clay pipes that were donated to us by markenpipes.com/3. 3 grams of tobacco is required, I do not think these pipes will hold 3 grams 4. The rules have 41 articles of compliance which seems somewhat onerous for or first time out, down the road if there is interest maybe we can have a sanctioned event. We will loosely follow the rules...pretty much article 17-24, and everyone will police themselves about when their pipe goes out and recording their time. Several people have already received their clay pipes, please bring them, and if you forget to bring it, let everyone else that has not received a clay pipe to get theirs first before requesting a substitute, we have a limited supply and may not have enough for a first time attendee, if we do though, you will be able to participate. One of our members, Steve the engineer has donated a Savory's Ludlow unsmoked estate pipe, shape 395.. Savory's Brand created in 1885 by H.L. Savory & Co. and taken over by Dunhill. The pipe tobacco that we will be using will be of a Virginia varietal...Bring your best game! The Pipe night will take place on Wednesday, September 25th at 5 PM. Hope to see you there, stay cool!

I'm planning on being there, but probably wont enter the contest. I'm still learing this thing! (Of course if there ends up being an extra clay pipe I might change my mind )

Thanks Dan, but the absence is inexcusable.... Does this mean that you're going to break my Savinelli in half at Pipe Night?

Our first slow smoke contest was a smoking success, we had a great time, and individuals posted some great times considering that this was the first time we dipped our toes into this. And thanks to Marken pipes for the generous donation of clay pipes in support of the local pipe club! markenpipes.com/www.facebook.com/ken.markus.1401Terry in the front, won the booby prize...he is new to pipe smoking and had difficulty getting the horse out of the gate....he won a key ring MM cob and some Borkum Riff.....I almost followed him within a few seconds, a tiny spark was my friend as I puffed like a locomotive....these clays and the restrictiveness made it a challenge. I came in 3rd, winning a tin of H&H White Knight...38 minutes. Dante came in 2nd, winning the Turkish Meer......47 minutes...He didn't smoke like Dante's inferno, he was a cool smoker. And Cliff, (Spartacus) really knows how to come to battle, with an impressive 64 minutes, he won the Savorys of England (Dunhill second) briar that was generously donated by pipe club member Steve...Way to go Cliff!

Sounds like a great idea!
By the way....as small as these pipes were, they handled 3 grams of tobacco nicely.

Looks like it was a great turnout and nice work Cliff on winning the competition. This makes month #4 I have had to miss the Saturday meeting due to birthdays/baptisms/graduations. I look forward to pipe night in a couple of weeks and next months club meeting.

Ender 03.... I learned that had I simply dredged the ash and dumped it, tamp and keep puffing, I could have gone longer... even though I tamped lightly, I think the ash created a dome snuffing it out. After my disqualification, I relit and it burned much better prior to my burn-out.

Them things only happen occasionally, we are like the crew down at Cheers... you can come in and usually catch Cliff or Norm there... glad to see you when you can make it... pipe nights are tough for me.

Good morning! I want to thank everyone for making me feel so welcome. I was out of the contest before it began thanks to an overly tight pack and my inexperience using matches! It was still fun to get to know everyone, and I have some new tobaccos to try out as well! I am sorry I had to leave so soon, but I had other engagements to get to. Next time I'll plan better and sit a while longer.
