In my youth, I loaded many a pipe over a album cover. Later, after I married, I'd fill a pipe over a copy of Cosmo, or Woman's Day ,or some such thing. Many of you likely fill a bowl ,very neatly , over the tin or jar you're pulling from, I just seem to leave a trail of whatever I'm into ,a drop of coffee, a speck of tobacco, or a dot of ash...as you might guess, all this comes with a hearty backlash of comments from the better half. One day, when sed better half was heading out to the local Goodwill with a donation ,I snatched a small white relish tray from the top of a box. At 3 and 1/2 by 6 inches, it was just the ticket! "what do you want with that?" asked S.W.K.A... "Why, I can load my pipe over it, mix small amounts of tobacco in it, even sit my pipe in it whenever my pipe rest is holding another pipe" I countered... " You're the one who sed we need to thin out some things around here" came the wife's reply... "I know, but ,with this you'll never see another speck of tobacco on your tablecloth" I lied... With a little grin and the evil eye, she went off to the Goodwill , and the "spill tray " has been as close as my zippo since then

I bought several little trays to use for this and they dissappear as the wife finds a use for them. I finally bought a leather tray made for the purpose and it stays put. I used album covers for something like that back in the 70s, but I just can't recall exactly what.

I'm a fan of trays myself. Picked up this little gem @ the Habitat for Humanity store in a neighboring town. I think I paid either $3 or $4 for it. I know, I know.... Highway robbery... ;-)

While we're talkin about Habitat for Humanity finds (at least I'm talkin bout it anyway) Here's a neat little pipe stand I found there as well. Yes, it was also $3 or $4. (don't know why I keep going in there and paying such ridiculous prices) ;-)

I did find 4 Bossons heads at Goodwill ,last week, for only $4.50 each ...we have twenty or so, and that's the cheapest I've seen them...they're kinda cool, and no longer produced . We couldn't leave them behind.

I use a wooden bowl that Walt gave me. Before that, I used plain paper.

I use an A5 sheet of stationery paper. Just the right size, I can bend easily to put the residue back in the jar, and I toss it every few weeks and grab a new sheet. Works for me.

I like the really cheap paper plates, but one would last months if my wife didn't keep throwing them away. The used copy paper is a good idea. No waste.

Tried to use this, my wife’s over 100 yr old cypress dough tray, almost came to blows, I skedaddled knowing she was really pissed.! I can understand her feelings, as tobacco does leave a "residue" that could make its way into the dough that is rising there.

I put some empty ball jars in the dishwasher last night but it wasn't full so I left it. Wife opened it this morning and started fussing because all the dirty dishes smell like tobacco. Even after going through the wash the jars hold a tobacco odor. I certainly would not use any of the porous kitchen tools around the baccy.

While I use the wooden bowls of which Josh mentioned, I now use more frequently the empty "side dish" paper trays that I picked up at Rudys BBQ while in San Antonio...they are flexible and I can load a pipe with the tobacco while still in the tray.

I still use that same paper tray you gave me as well. It just works perfectly.

At work in the truck, I use the company provided paper manifest in the office and on the road for the same...If I prepare the plug before dispatch, I open the jaws of the clipboard, and it holds it firmly under the lip of the table, as the back of the clipboard is a cutting block....company supplied basket coffee filters work great in the microwave to dry the tobacco. Cheap Charlie...
