I went into town yesterday..A local hardware store was celebrating it's 120th year in business. It's owned by a fella named Jack. It's mostly run by Jack's kids now.Jack shows up a few hours each day though to greet his old friends of which I'm one.I shook hands with Jack and told him I was glad to see him looking well.He will be 88 in December. He started working in the store in 1943 when he was about 15.He later bought it.Jack looked at me and said..You've been coming here a long time.I said since 1962.He said his coffee cup is older than that..I don't know how much longer Jack will be around, but when he goes he will be missed not only by me ,but by just about everyone in town..Most everyone knows him.

I miss them kind of stores....I am not a plumbing, carpentry, electrical expert by any stretch and when I have to deal with a problem, an old school store will treat you right with good advice and knowledgeable staff...if you pay a premium for that over big box stores, it is certainly better than return trips.

Sounds like a nice relationship has been built over the years. I love stores like that - where the people working there are part of the furniture and know everything about everything in the store, but also know all their customers.
I also love your stories, Larry.

It’s sad that we don’t have stores like that anymore, we used to have a shoe shop here and the old Italian man we called Fonzzie before the idiot on tv, Fonzzie would fix shoes, we fixed them in my day, wore them out and then fixed them, no throwaways then. Fonzzie would tell stories and his broken English was a joy to hear, I as a very young man was enthralled with that man. My Dad had a pool hall and I would sometimes skip out and go to Mr Fonzzie shop, the smells of leather , shoe polish to me were just sublime, he always had time for me, wonderful man.i know what you mean Larry, a society that’s grown impartial, it’s a sad thing.

Us old farts all have thoughts like that...people and places that we miss...a society that was a pleasure to be part of...all gone and never to return....yes, it is a sad thing....gives you a heaviness of heart.

It's wonderful to hear stories like yours; all too soon the type of business and people you describe will be a thing of the past. we're becoming a world of introverts who live through our phones and computers...dial up and have your food sent in, don't get off you butt, cause somebody will cook it too...need a car?...get it off the internet and we'll drop it off at your house...need a mate? their as close as your fingertips... Like cash has given way to plastic, the art of just talking will someday be lost to the art of texting...
I hope I'm wrong, but I see whole shopping centers shut down cause folks just don't want to get out and shop anymore.

Funny, two of the stores I miss the most from the closest town are the hardware store and shoe repair shop. They both closed relatively (15 years?) lately. The other one I miss is a stationary store that closed a good 35 years ago. Don’t ask me why, I just loved that place.

Works better in spoken words 😔
