It's about time for egg nog to show up in the supermarket...I spent a lifetime in dairy departments for Safeway and Kroger, and turst me ,egg nog is a big deal this time of year.
Like pumpkin spice, it rolls out slowly, in late September, and by the end of October even some of the larger drugstore chains will offer some. We used to make it here at home ,but sometime back in the eighties, small ,family owned dairies started marketing product that was so thick and tasty that we gave in and just grabbed the "good stuff" in the glass bottles. Here in Richmond, we have a " Homestead " egg nog ; folks who know of it will be demanding it very shortly.
Anyway, since ,like liver, egg nog is a love it ,or hate it kind of thing, I was wondering ...do you love it...if so , do drink it plain or spiked, and if spiked ...what with?
I love it plain, but at holiday time some dark rum finds it's way to the table as well.
Just a nice fall subject to think about as you rake leaves

I love egg nog! These days I drink it plain. When I was drinking myself through alcoholism I mixed it with Bourbon or Dark Rum.

In Baton Rouge Kleinpeters Egg Nogg was as they say to die for. A local dairy, they had no equal in freshness , and quality, I even started drinking their milk, and I’m not a milk guy. Straight is the way I liked it.

Hate it. Drank a bunch before a HS basketball practice and threw up all over the place. Haven't been able to drink it since.

For me it is best in big punch bowl with vanilla ice cream and splash of brandy.

Its great stuff. Goes well with a pipe, used in coffee as the creamer and sweetener and pour it into an ice cream maker for, well, making ice cream.

Egg nog is a favorite of mine. Family tradition is to have a glass Christmas morning before exchanging gifts. Nowadays includes a dram of good bourbon in the glass. Love it.

I have to say I've never tried it. Not sure I want to. I am sure that it's of British origin, like black pudding. I like it, store bought or homemade. The store bought stuff has things added to it that you couldn't even get at home. All kinds of artificial thickeners and flavors. But, I figure that one or two glasses a year won't kill me.

Best add-ins: Captain Morgan Southern Comfort Bourbon in that order.

It dates back to medieval England and was called "Posset". It appears to be mostly an American thing these days. It has the same ingredients as homemade ice cream. Just melt some vanilla ice cream and you will have something close. Add a little nutmeg and some Irish whiskey for the win.

You got to be kidding!!! It is not even October. Where is "October Fest" beers and such? Then there is Halloween Punch, you know, Peyote in wine and fruit juice. Get those spook visions going. Eggnog before Thanksgiving is just not right.
Anyway, enjoy what you like and pay no mind to the old stick-in-the-mud.

Mother Nature's natural Mescaline. Much the same effect, different plant source. Good in wine punch as the cactus is a bit sour and tart. Really brings out the spooks at night. LOL! Quite popular beverage at Grateful Dead concerts back in the good old days. There was always a punch bowl. I used a Dixie Cup.

Too early yet for eggnog here. Right now, we're going into Apple Cider season! We start eggnog season around Thanksgiving time.

I will buy a quart over the holidays, for tradition. Like fruitcake. Never finish it & toss, but tradition. Wife likes Southern in hers, me Capt. Morgan or brandy.

I love egg nog. So many good recipes. There are a couple of dairies locally that produce it without fillers. Just pure good stuff. We have lots of it around during the holidays.

No way I just hang out next to the punch bowl and double dip my cup. Fruitcake is the bomb unless it is bad fruitcake, most people find it disgusting so I end up with a few of them via where momma works.

It is tasty especially once spiked with Bourbon, Brandy or Rum. I never make it and seldom buy it as it just too rich for me.

Eggnog is pretty unhealthy but compare it to ice cream, at least those that use real sugar along with cream and/or eggs. And that is why my wife and I get one or two small containers of it over the holiday season and enjoy it for the time we have it. This is also why many of the brands can just be poured into an ice cream machine to be churned into, you know, ice cream. Eggnog is in many ways, unfrozen ice cream.
