I am so new, I am not sure if I am introducing myself in the right thread.
I first got the idea of smoking a pipe, near a campfire, as I am a Boy Scout leader. Then I learned there is no smoking around youths so I gave the idea up after getting two corn cob pipes, tool and lighter.
I met some friends who get together for drinks and smoke pipes or cigars while they BS each other. They dabble in pipes but are not experts by no means.
I have the pipe bug again. I have never been a daily smoker of anything, so I don't inhale. This will be a part time hobby, but I want to enjoy it.
I am looking for a briar, but not sure where to start. At first I thought I wanted a straight billiard smooth. Now I am leaning towards a brandy 1/2 curve (?), but I still like the smooth. I hope to learn more here.
Rick

welcome & greets from probably the "senior" person here. Long timer both pipe/cigar. Hope others can help with your quest, most of us are just that.
Ed Duncan, Batavia, NY (50miles East of Buffalo) pipe/cigar since '62 (12/40)

Welcome from N.W. Arkansas. Good bunch of guys here and alot of information. Cobs work just fine and in my opinion - better for certain blends. Theres a certain feel to a briar that is something special.

Welcome, from South Georgia. If information and enabling is what you are looking for, you've came to the right place.
There's absolutely nothing wrong with cobs either. I reach for mine more than my briars or Meer.

How can anyone be around Scouts and not know smoking is verboten, let alone a Scout leader?

I remember getting kicked out of Scouts because they caught me smoking Camels to often.

How can anyone be around Scouts and not know smoking is verboten, let alone a Scout leader? When I was in the Scouts everyone smoked. This anti-smoking nazi-ism is a fairly recent thing. Nobody was going to tell those WW2 heroes that they couldn't smoke. Of course the boys weren't allowed to do it under penalty of expulsion.

Welcome from Northern Ireland. You'll find a lot of help here. Don't be afraid to ask anything, even if it's been asked before.
Isn't it strange that you can sit in front of a camp fire and inhale smoke for hours at a time with your scout troupe, but you can't do it with a pipe in your mouth.
