Take a hike!
My son bought my wife a Google interactive speaker, a couple times it was left plugged in in the kitchen, and it listened into the radio program from a tabletop radio as I listened to the news in the morning..and it started talking to me. Today, with the Woot App on my smartphone, offers came across for Alexa eyeglasses, and just a few minutes ago, an Alexa enabled microwave...what next, an Alexa night light with an infrared camera in your bedroom?
I think much of this technology is for the birds, especially when you know how much information is steadily being collected... two of my kids seem to dismiss it all for the sake of convenience...If the co-founder of Apple Steve Wozniak says it is best to avoid a lot of this stuff, I think it is advice worth listening to.

More disturbing (judging by sales volume) is how many people, willing allow themselves to be spied upon.

They do have issues but all technology does. If one is worried about voice activated devices spying on them, they should also be worries about computers, tablets, phones and more that have internet access.
All are watching, listening and reporting.

Yes, were a few clicks down the road from 1984 . . . .wonder what Orwell would have thought?

Smartphones, tablets, etc. all have voice command technology. Your friends have them, theyre in stores. Most have cameras. The streets are literally littered with cameras. You really can't get away from it.

I mean, with the constant evolution and advancement in AI, they can map your brain through your eye. We've had 1984 for years.

This is why I constantly provide random, funny searches for Google.
Example: monkey in rubber pants + party elephants + kegs of beer

I tried those voice commands with my charcoal chimney on the Weber this evening. "Chimney! Light!!", said I. Silence. "Weber! Ignite!". More silence. "Zippo! Light!!", now there we had a response. Charcoal ad hickory chunks a smoking.

When I get a new device that I don't want to listen to me I disable everything I can find on it. Can't do that with a phone, but I disabled all the apps. When I can no longer type or move I will then accept voice control.

The wife got a Lenvo tablet it has alexa. I asked it for hooker and it didn't understand. We messed with it for a good bit and the novelty wore off pretty fast. The app I hate is Ad Choices like you have a choice. As for 1984 we are already there fake news, rewriting history, discouraging heterosexual sex and in a state of perpetual warfare.

Each morning, a missionary advertises neon sign He tells the native population that civilization is fine And three educated savages holler from a bamboo tree That civilization is a thing for me to see
So bongo, bongo, bongo, I don't wanna leave the Congo, oh no no no no no Bingo, bangle, bungle, I'm so happy in the jungle, I refuse to go Don't want no bright lights, false teeth, doorbells, landlords, I make it clear That no matter how they coax him, I'll stay right here
I looked through a magazine the missionary's wife concealed (Magazine? What happens?) I see how people who are civilized bung you with automobile (You know you can get hurt that way Dani At the movies they have got to pay many coconuts to see (What do they see, Darling?) Uncivilized pictures that the newsreel takes of me
So bongo, bongo, bongo, he don't wanna leave the Congo, oh no no no no no Bingo, bangle, bungle, he's so happy in the jungle, he refuse to go Don't want no penthouse, bathtub, streetcars, taxis, noise in my ear So, no matter how they coax him, I'll stay right here
They hurry like savages to get aboard an iron train And though it's smokey and it's crowded, they're too civilized to complain When they've got two weeks vacation, they hurry to vacation ground (What do they do, Darling?) They swim and they fish, but that's what I do all year round
So bongo, bongo, bongo, I don't wanna leave the Congo, oh no no no no no Bingo, bangle, bungle, I'm so happy in the jungle, I refuse to go Don't want no jailhouse, shotgun, fish-hooks, golf clubs, I got my spears So, no matter how they coax him, I'll stay right here
They have things like the atom bomb, so I think I'll stay where I am Civilization, I'll stay right here Danny Thomas and the Andrew Sisters, Civilzation

I've sold my soul to Google and Alexa. It's not worth much to them though...THEY are bored of me.

They figured a way around warrantless wire taps - just have you install them yourself.
Just because you're paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

All are watching, listening and reporting. This is the thing. If you have even one internet-connected device with a microphone, it simply doesn't matter how many more you have - you've already been allowing "the Them" to listen to you, so why does it matter if they can do it in stereo? Literally almost everyone in this country has such a device already, including everyone on this forum or you couldn't be here. Every cell phone, tablet, computer, even most TVs these days, all have a mic and an internet connection. I thought it was kinda funny when the dedicated speakers like Alexa started scaring people as if this was new... this ship sailed about 10 years ago.

How would someone go off the grid these days, but still stay connected ? I guess that wouldn’t be off the grid. It would be nice to not be trackable at any given time. Even if a person were to dump all electronic devices,’phones etc, how would they escape ‘facial recognition’ programs ? We really live in interesting times, and I don’t know how good it is.

Not as much information as you browsing information. Facebook and Google are tracking you even if you don't have an account. Do Not Track software? Well they track you via the panopticlick.eff.org/How about browsing in general. Your ISP sets up a DNS when you hook to the internet. Type in an address and it looks up the IP address and the browser opens the page. Guess what? Your ISP is collecting that data and selling too. Alexa? Well I admit I use it. Pretty convenient. I ask it to turn on the coffee in the morning, check weather, play music. Wife uses it to add to her grocery list. Do you need it? Nope, but sure is nice to use. Bottom line. Privacy and security is an illusion. Only way to not have your privacy violated is unplug from the internet and get rid of your cell phone (which is leaking data to these guys a lot more than Alexa)

Which is where I eventually have no problem going to.... absolute power corrupts, and people of a certain mindset desire to control others absolutely... already seeing it by the heads of big tech, and they arrogantly flaunt it.

When I go away to the cabin, it’s no cable, cell phones, etc. I have to say, being disconnected even for a few days does absolute wonders for me. It’s not practical that I will ever live off the grid but a few days at a time has a major impact.
And I find out that as important as I think I am, life goes on just fine without me.

I like to give fake answers and do bizarre searches you got to keep em guessing. Judging by the less than stellular performance of the FBI in recent investigations I think we are all pretty safe.

Somehow, most of the snooping, tracking, profiling doesn't bother me much. A bit, yes, but I don't worry about it. At the same time, I give out as little as possible, but doubt that makes a big difference if someone really was out to get me.

But, give technology another five minutes and it will all be a moot point. We humans have so many signatures to identify us it will be impossible to truly mask yourself soon Those foolish kids in Hong Kong. Don’t they know safety is more important than freedom? Hey, I bet the computer doesn’t yet know what to do with the image of a pipe clenched in one’s teeth!

Saturday evening, I had dinner with friends and a neighbor brought his lady friend who is a refugee from China. A woman in her early 50s, a business owner and property owner, educated. She had comments about what is going on in China. The repression is far worse than we know. They are quite advanced with facial recognition and surveillance is way beyond anything we can imagine in this country. She advised us to safeguard our freedoms. Freedoms such as we enjoy are antithetical to centralized authority and will always be under assault.

I made light of Hong Kong, but I've read about how bad things are there and even worse on the mainland. Frankly, if we could exchange our Antifa people for the HK protestors, that would be a good trade. If you have a subscription to the Economist, look for the article, "China has turned Xinjiang into a police state like no other." I'd copy and paste it here, but the length would upset some people. The Economist painted a very bleak, totalitarian picture despite their usual love of such things. Gird yourself, things are going to get interesting.

I saw that too about China..the social scoring that is taking place is right out of a twisted movie.
Dr. Michael Rectenwald on the digital Gulag, and Dr. Robert Epstein are worth familiarizing yourself with what they have to say...it is not conspiratorial by any stretch, all the claims can be backed up. Most will poo-poo it though, I had that experience this last weekend with family members....sheep.

If one is worried about voice activated devices spying on them, they should also be worries about computers, tablets, phones and more that have internet access. All are watching, listening and reporting. Yes they are. And, if you think the government doesn't have the ability to "hack" into Google, Yahoo, Twitter and Facebook, etc., and see what has been collected on your searches, I have some prime waterfront property to sell you in the Louisiana marsh. Oh! and think about those fancy navigation systems in your vehicle. It's wouldn't be too hard for the state governments to figure out how fast you were driving when you make a trip in two hours that should take close to three hours if you were doing the speed limit.
