Tea stained shelf here. I really like it, but I'm not sure a pipe would look good this way... For the $20 and shipping to get a pearwood block I'll risk it I think. What do you think?

I have used this process on smaller oak projects. Perhaps it would work on pear wood. BUT, I would not recommend smoking the pipe. I have no idea how long the fumes would be in the wood. www.woodworkersjournal.com/fuming-simple-effective-chemical-stain-wood/Perhaps it would be better to use this finish on a pipe shelf / rack. I recently made some racks to store my straight pipes. Someone gave me lots of 1.25" x 1.25" oak. I cut them to the required length and then used a 3/4" fostner bit to drill holes through the wood. Then, between the holes, drill two holes so you can mount it to the wall. Of course, this would only work on straight pipes. Also, if the stems are larger than 3/4", you would need to use thicker stock and a larger bit.

I actually rubbed the tea water directly onto the wood, let it dry, then rubbed it with the solution of iron acetate obtained by putting steel / iron items in vinegar and letting it soak a few days. I wonder it the fume issue would be as bad this way? I dunno but Im going to give my shelf a smell test tonight to see if there is ANY discernible smell. (It's also why I dont plan to put the solution in the bowl if I use this method at all.

I kinda doubt there will be any strong smell that will effect a pipe. I've built my own pipe racks out of walnut and finished them with Linseed oil and if you've ever been around it ya know what it smells like. It dissipated fast enough and has never effected my pipes in anyway and the minute it dried the pipes went up.

That might hold one or two pipes.

I made 3 of those and now I have 2 that sit empty in my closet. Hey but, maybe someday they'll be put back to use.

Now THAT is one BEAUTIFUL pipe rack! But why just 75 pipes?

Sorry for hijacking your thread sir, I certainly didn't mean to, just wanted to show you that I made some and used Linseed oil to finish them without problems. Yours looks just fine for what you intend it for, mine was only to hold pipes and not tobacco, etc.

Been a while since I began this, I thought you might want to see it on the wall with the fixings on it.
