As a newbie I have been watching ebay pipes to see different styles and what different brands sell for. Not sure how many of you watch or buy, but I have a question. When I was buying and selling model railroad items, I would see what things sold for buying or selling. I also had a pretty good idea of the values before hand. With pipes, there are no two alike in most cases. I usually look at auctions that get bids, but also know that people can get in a bid war. So I put a comfortable price and win or lose. I watch sellers that get bids on most items, telling me that their prices are in line. The ones that don't get bids on many listings, I assume they are overpricing everything. I avoid these sellers that don't get bids. I made a bid on a Comoy's that was an auction or buy now for over $125. Winner got it for $44. It was very clean and a friend, who used to sell pipes, thought it would go close to the buy it now price. www.ebay.com/itm/COMOYS-London-Pride-apple-3-part-C/283624831276?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AITSo to my question, is the market for pipes soft or are they bringing top dollar. The ones that I see get the most action are Dunhills.

Dunhills always have an always will be high. If you look long an hard you can score a deal. There are way to many pipes out there a lot cheaper an smoke as good or better then new dunnies. You have to go older to get a Great smoker.
Word to the wise NEVER buy a pipe that doesn't have a return guarantee for any reason. Good luck on your quest.
An Welcome.

Yes, I think collectors will pay the premium prices for pipes, and I think the number of pipe smokers is going down?
I posted the Comoy's in the original statement, as I forgot to do this.
I also move past the ones that don't give a photo from every angle. Feel they are hiding something. But I also buy from those with a high feedback score, with many listings.

If you are looking for a bargain, try an Edwards pipe from the 60s or 70s. The briar is Algerian and oil cured. Great smokers and not expensive.

just because a pipe has no bids, does not mean 20 people aren't watching it with an eye to its closing date.

I have never purchased from this seller personally. I have however seen some very volatile threads regarding this seller. Beyond that I know nothing. 😀

Beyond that I know nothing. 😀 He has 100% perfect feedback, so the ones he sells, must be going to happy customers. His sales just seem to be a small % of those listed. He sold 25 out of his last 200 ended listings. So he is either overpriced or the demand is low and people aren't willing to pay retail value. That is my question. .... Is the market hot or cold on pipes?

I have bought from him. He was fine for me. His prices tend to be more on the high side, but he has excellent pipes.

Shiny was busted a few years ago for photo shopping fills and blemishes to make the pipe appear better than it was. I would never buy from them but some people have had good luck. As I have mentioned before, ebay is a chance game. Why add more to the chance of getting something you aren't happy with by buying from a seller who has that track record. YMMV
One of the big keys to ebay is PATIENCE.
I think the reason the Comoy's you listed didn't go for what it could have is the pictures and presentation are not great (is that cake or an inner ring LOL). The shipping is high and the return policy deters confidence. Just my two cents.

The shipping is high and the return policy deters confidence. Just my two cents. That's what I liked about your auctions, almost all of them get bids, meaning you are pricing them right. When you only sell 25 of 200, that scares me. Or alerts me that the pricing is high. www.ebay.com/itm/Stanwell-Royal-Guard-448-Made-In-Denmark-very-lightly-Used/333343093742?hash=item4d9ccbf3ee:g:LucAAOSwsJRditALI found a few pipes being sold by this person and she is selling her father's pipes. I would offer $30 (my top) for this, but I see all Royal Guards with 9mm filters. Not sure how a 9mm would fit here, in this stem. If you don't mind, will you look at her pipes and see if they are priced right? Thanks

I can't say much about the USA ebay market, but what has been suggested before (to other people) is that if you want a briar pipe, there are alternatives to estate pipes on ebay. A brand new Morgan Bones pipe, for example, can be picked up for the price of an estate pipe (or much less) and they smoke great.
That said, if you're going for the aesthetics, then maybe estate offers more variety at a cheaper price.
As for your question, I think the market is warm. It's not cold but it's not as hot as it could be either...but there's variation in this.

I would love to get a nice bowl with holes in the stem/bit. I don't care about collectivity for my first one. I would just buy a new stem and be happy. I just want it to give me a reason to want another, so has to be a good smoker, once I figure out what that means. .. lol
Of course, I would or should get that for a reasonable price.

I have purchased maybe 20 pipes from Ebay in my 4 year pipe career. A few of them were small lots 5 or 6 pipes. 1 of them from a seller in Germany. Who I have bought from since then. The first was at that beginning of my journey. So I knew nothing. I learned about europeans liking 9mm filters from this😆 All6 are still in my rotation. I am not an avid buyer or seller. So my purchases were all based on seller feedback. Did I over pay for a pipe? In the eyes of our mentors here, probably. But I’m happy, and I guess in the end if it’s worth it to you, so be it. Am I lucky? Probably, I have never had any issues with the purchases I have made. I pipe I bought was from a seller who sells anything they find at garage sales etc type of seller. The pipe was listed as clean. But when it arrived it came with a ghost! I just made mention of this to the seller as something to be aware of in the future, if she as to sell anymore pipes. She thanked me for the info. Next thing I knew I had a $5 credit from her in my Paypal account. This was a $20 Prince of Wales billiard pipe.

I have purchased over 150 pipes from eBay. It was learning experience that was a lot cheaper than the current cost of college and a lot more fun. I have bought pipes from Shiney Pipes and Pipestud and I have been satisfied every time. You really have to do your homework on anything you buy from eBay.

If you want a decent pipe from a reputable seller on EBay, check Tim West. Pipes will be cleaned and any issues dealt with.

I have bought pipes from Shiney Pipes and Pipestud and I have been satisfied every time. You really have to do your homework on anything you buy from eBay. Most of my hobbies have had books that would show values. I can only find values on a handful of pipes that are available for sale. I plan to pick up an inexpensive one to start, and then learn from there. For one, I read older Stanwells, that were made in Denmark were good pipes. But when I find a Stanwell made in Denmark, I have no idea when it was made. Or if a name brand had many artists, I don't know who was good and who was not. How long have machined pipes been made? I understand it is safer to get a good straight pipe over a bent because the hole is easier to drill straight, true? I have been focused on GBD, Stanwell, Edward and Comoy. It seems easier to learn as much as I can, about a few brands, that have been highly recommended in my price range.

The seller you linked above with the Stanwell sub brand is a tad high on prices in my opinion. That is a $20 pipe to me but I am a cheap skate.

I won a modest Ropp Brandy @12.00 from Tim West and when packaging, the shank snapped. He contacted me immediately and offered full refund or repair. I went with the repair and he got the shank squared away and capped it with a chrome ferrule and mailed it out in 8 hours of the auction ending.

They are THE BEST pipes ever made prior to the "90s. I am working a deal with a member here on one. It is on ebay in rough shape, but he says it can look pretty good with a bath and some make-up. I hope its better than this date I had one time. In the morning, a case wouldn't have kept me there.

just because a pipe has no bids, does not mean 20 people aren't watching it with an eye to its closing date. This is the answer. Snipers drive me crazy. But, save for a Rueben era Charatan, I have my classics. Although, I still have a mania for old Loewe's.

Also, a lot of sellers include the beautification of the pipe in their pricing. You would be shocked what a good refurbisher can do with a pipe that looks like death. I buy a pipe that needs work and send it to Mike Myers at Walker Pipes to do his magic. Having Mike, or your preferred refurbisher, spruce up a pipe is still a cheaper path to your new classic pipe.
