I spent the past four days up in Wyoming hunting agate, petrified wood and old bottles. The highlight of the trip for me though was visiting the wild horses of Eden Valley again. Most of the same horses were there that I saw two years ago, plus some youngsters. Beautiful scenery for photography. The Rock Springs district has 2500 wild horses.

Thanks for the pictures Don, it looks like a picture perfect way to spend some time. We have large herds down here on the reservation, but not in them numbers.

Looks like freedom to me. Are they protected? Mike, they are protected, but controlled. The population is limited because they are pretty hard on the land if they are not controlled. They round some up and adopt them out periodically. I don't think they destroy wild horses, but you never know. They will move out of the road, but come back closer to check you out, making for great photo ops. There are also some of the biggest pronghorn you will see anywhere. Majestic animals. Sorry to say I did not get any pictures of the antelope.

The wild horse herds we have just across the border in Colorado are not protected and are subject to all kinds of heinous conduct. Shot for fun, rounded up for the horse meat packers. All the land in that county is privately owned so no level of government has authority. While the state could pass laws to protect wild horses, the State of Colorado apparently has no interest in doing so. They have been petitioned numerous times. These horses have had their blood traced back to the horses the Spanish brought with them from Spain.
I am glad to read some wild horses are protected somewhere.

Shooting a horse for fun . . . . man that's a sorry statement. I thought they were in danger in some areas.

I know that when I was in the meat business, some of the cold storages handled frozen horse meat for the zoos. I always wondered where they sourced the meat, controlling wild herd population is what I always suspected.
In some European countries horse meat consumption is normal? I had heard that it is years ago.

As long as the product is legally declared, I see no moral problem with people eating meat, be it possum, horse, or beef...as for shooting animals just to kill them for no reason, is utterly ridiculous. I do remember reading a story where an Aussie said that people complained about them killing Skippy the Bush Kangaroo for sport, and he said that if you had six foot rats decimating your property that could kick you so hard your grandkids would feel it, your attitude would change.
I guess that if the authorities saw the horse population out of control culling measures would be appropriate if animal predators were unable to keep it in check...still the meat should be harvested for zoo critters or dog food.

I have heard that horse tastes good and I don't have a problem either way. I personally don't like the idea of it. We should all be eating nutria twice a week. Of course Peta objects.

I adamantly opposed to eating horses. When cooked, horse flesh smells like burning human flesh.

I have always heard that humans taste like pork. Long Pork. I've known a few that were so far from human that I could imagine having a bite. Probably before I would eat a dog or horse. π΄ππΆπ

Taking notes for the end of the world. By the way it is not against the law to eat horse meat depending on what state you live in.

If you have eaten a Ikea meatball or a Burger King Whopper you have already had horse meat possibly. Well at least they found a use for a totally obsolete animal. Like the pigeon a flying rat unless you call it squab.

I understand that horse and dog is eaten in many parts of the world. I would eat either if I was hungry enough. It was the discussion of the odors of cremation that was giving me the heebie jeebies.
