Most online stores are doing the same (though I'm curious about using what I'm assuming is the seller's state sales tax rather than the buyer's). Amazon has been doing it for a while now also. The loophole lasted far longer than I ever thought it would, and it was nice while it lasted, but we all know how big gubment loves its tax dollars...

I saw this happening when SP decided that they need to fall in line with the wishes of the states...I cannot blame them, compliance is an easier route than facing litigation expenses against a state that has unlimited resources to fight you with. Our Pipe club member Gary has been proactive in sounding the alert to us in the pipe club. azdor.gov/transaction-privilege-tax/retail-sales-subject-tpt/out-state-sellers?utm_medium=email&utm_source=govdeliveryThe Arizona governor has become a big disappointment to me....the coffers have been filled and they have a surplus after the Gov. Napolitano wet fart faded off into the atmosphere... (Thank you Arizona Voters). He doesn't seem much different in that he fails as seeing it as a funding problem to keep the engine on the tracks as opposed to fiscal responsibility, and a spending problem on his part...he is a whore, pretty much like the rest.

I bought something the other day and I was surprised to see tax on it. I actually would not have spent as much if I had realized that I would have to pay tax. Around 11% too.

I'm assuming that's similar to our 20% VAT is it?

It appears that they are taxing shipping, which I had never heard of before. But then sellers could list items cheap with high shipping rates. You would then add the total of both for what you would be willing to pay. I have not seen taxes when I have bought on Amazon from other sellers.
This was 2 days ago. Order Summary Item(s) Subtotal: $29.99 Shipping & Handling: $0.00 Total before tax: $29.99 Estimated tax to be collected: $0.00 Rewards Points: -$29.99 Grand Total: $0.00
Has anyone paid tax on an item bought outside of the US?

Texas is 6.25%, but local taxing jurisdictions can add up tp 2%. So I still go 12 miles to pay 6.25% on large purchases. We have no state income tax though, so this is why it might be higher than others.

All of my out of state parts suppliers are charging me tax and have been for a few months now. It was nice while it lasted.

Originally state sales tax was supposed to be paid by the buyer at tax time (At least in the cases that I am aware of.). For those who complied, some (perhaps all) states allowed folks to pay a set amount without itemizing all their purchases. If one bought a lot of products online, this turned out to be positive and kept the buyer within the law. Most people did not bother, so the onus is now being transferred to the out of state seller.

Greedy government, S.S.D.Y. Corrected that for you. Apparently charging tax on shipping fees is variable by state.
