So I was in a local vintage consignment shop the other day and came across this pipe. While it's not my typical preference of style (I prefer sitters) it was hard to turn down the price of $26. I'm not super knowledgeable when it comes to pipes, only been smoking for a bit over a year. It has "Kapp" imprinted on it. Based on the most basic of google searches I'm gathering that makes it a Petterson? Is that the case? So what do you think? Did I get a good deal? Here is a picture i.imgur.com/OnMbOoa.jpg

I don't know enough to say but it doesnt look too bad of a pipe. So even if its some no-name thing, if it smokes well and you only paid $26, you did well.

It's not like any Peterson that I've ever seen. Kapp made pipes under his own name around 1865. It's not the right style or age. But it has a good shape and interesting carving. If you like it and it smokes OK you are golden.

Sure looks like a winner to me. Let us know how it smokes. Definitely Irish.

Look up Custombilt, Marxman, Biltmore etc. I think it is along those lines and not a Peterson.

pipephil.eu/logos/en/logo-k1.html"Maybe" doesn't give me a reason to think that it is a remarkable find...however, I have some pipes with minimal markings of undeterminal pedigree that are fantastic smokers...I hope that this one delivers.

Looks like you got a bargain. I hope it smokes well and you enjoy it. That's all that matters.

The fact that it's stamped "Imported Briar" on the shank would lead me to think that it was made in the US. I think that peteguy is on the right track. Whatever the case, it's a cool pipe for a cool price!

Poor choice of words on my part, re-reading it now it could be taken as snarky or offensive, that was not my intent. Should have said “maybe” by the lone pipephil author doesnt give me reason to think that it was made by Peterson.... I will do some checking in a day or so, I vaguely remember a reference about Kapp pipes, I believe that Mark Irwin wrote about it...

Like others have said, if it smokes well, a briar pipe for $26.00 is a bargain no matter the heritage. The stem is likely ebonite, which can be polished to a deep black shine. The stummel should polish up nicely as well. I think you did well. Happy smoking!

Yep, shine that bad boy up, and don't spare the pipe cleaners...you'll have a friend for life for only 26 bucks; can't beat that!
It looks closely akin to Custombuilt, as others have said, but the main thing is that it smokes well, and I hope it does.
you did fine, congrats!

That is 100% definitely not a Kapp Bros pipe from the pre-Peterson era.
It is, however, a Custombilt clone in extraordinarily good condition. A real mid-century classic American style.
Perhaps Kapp was a local tobacconist?
The rustication is so clean. It is often well nigh impossible to clean up a Custombilt or Custombilt-style pipe. This one is pristine from the start. Just needs a little steam de-oxidation. What a find!

If you take the URL in your original post (https://i.imgur.com/OnMbOoa.jpg) and pop it into the Image button, you will show the image inline. Saves everyone clicking and waiting to load another page, and is a handier reference.

Do you have photos of any other markings on the pipe? That would possibly help identify it better.

I'm afraid that the seller got the better of that deal.

There used to be quite a few tobacco shops in the US that made their own pipes. These days there's less than four that still do that. You probably found some remnant of those times. I would just smoke it and enjoy it. Congrats, its a unique looking billiard. That stem looks comfortable.

If the seller set the price at $26 and you paid that amount, the seller is happy. If you got an acceptable pipe for less then $30, then you should be happy.
Even if pipe was worth much more the $26, you did not steal it. You only accepted the seller's price.

Nothing to do with Irish. It appears to be a Custombilt copy, made in US. As for price...an item is worth what you're willing to pay for it.

my $.02 is that if you enjoy the pipe, you got a deal and a half. If not, lesson learned.
Smoke it, enjoy it.
Our opinions are just that, opinions.
