The tobaccapocalypse is upon us, at least in Ohio. I just got a notification from P&C that on Oct 16 Ohio customers will be charged a 17% excise tax on top of the sales tax. I sure am glad I took the advice to stock up and put a lot of tobacco away. I'm going with one more large bulk order and I should be good for a long time.

Just find some one you trust that doesn't live in Ohio an have them order for you. Make PP payments to them to cover it. I have done it for quit a few people over the years.
Sorry to hear it though.

Outrageous. How these States force businesses to become their unpaid bookkeepers, makes me spit nails!

I figured out Ohio's sales tax is 6.5% and add the new 17% tax and I'll have to pay 23.5% on tobacco. It's still cheaper to buy online than locally at the B&M. A $10.00 tin online will cost me $12.35 compared to $18.00 at the B&M. Bulk at the B&M runs from $5.00 to $8.00 an ounce for basic aro blends so I'm still better off buying the bulk of my tobacco online.
I still support my local B&M's and the shop where the pipe club meets but when I'm buying large amounts I'll still buy online.

Yeah...the greed factor runs deep.
Our Governor justified all the new online taxation that just kicked in by saying that it will allow the state run businesses to compete more fairly.
My response is, "Take your damn boot off of the neck of the in state B&M and lower their taxes so that they can compete"
Greasy politicians never think about what is in the best interest of the consumer, it is in the best interest of the bureaucracy to lighten the pockets of the serfs, and to feather their political nests.....they run on fiscal responsibility and turn on a dime.

As the responsibility for collecting sales tax has been given to the out of state sellers (formerly placed on the out of state buyers), it is no surprise that the sin tax will soon follow. Sad to say it will get worse as the FDA will add its charges and state governments continue to increase their rates.
PS I am curious to know if any here have yet to see sales tax added to your orders for your state? How many have heard that your state will soon follow with their sin tax?
My Report:In September, the online sellers I deal with started to charge sales tax for Kansas. I am not sure when the sin tax will be added.

Hum...
I have two orders coming from overseas. I will be curious how that goes. They didn't charge me anything when I purchased it. One package is in customs now and the other is on the way there.

I placed an order with SP to see if they were charging an excise tax and they are but it was around 10% and then the added 6.5 sales tax. So for the sake of taxation science I placed an order with P&C within a dollar of the SP order and the tax was near the same. I think P&C messed up in the email they sent me meaning I would be paying around 17% tax total and not 17% plus the sales tax. It still sucks but at least it's 6.5% less than I thought I would have to pay.

British Columbia tobacco taxes:
”A consumer must, at the time of making a purchase of tobacco in the form of cigars, pay to the government a tax at the rate of 90.5% of the taxable price of any cigar purchased by the consumer to a maximum tax of $7 per cigar.
A consumer must, at the time of making a purchase of tobacco in the form of cigarettes, pay to the government a tax at the rate of 27.5¢ for each cigarette purchased.
A consumer must, at the time of making a purchase of tobacco in a form other than cigars or cigarettes, pay to the government a tax at the rate of 37.5¢ for each gram of tobacco purchased.
The tax payable on tobacco, other than cigars, must be calculated separately on every package.”

Smokingpipes, P&C and Iwan Reis started collecting NYS sales tax on my orders around March (2019). The other regular sites are not collecting (yet). It’s only a matter of time. Now if I were to purchase tobacco from a site in NYS (IE cupofjoes), I would be charged an additional %75 percent tobacco tax ! Yet, it’s still much cheaper than elsewhere (outside America)
