So tonight while enjoying a bowl I began realizing things.
First, the more I hone my technique, the more I realize that it seems to need to be just a little different for each pipe and blend. The similarities are that when I smoke so slowly that it is on the edge of going out, and often does, I experience more flavor. Tongue burn is almost completely a thing of the past.
My Kawoodie has a shallower bowl then my unbranded briar. I don't know if that is a contributing factor, but I tend to need more relights in the Kawoodie. Conversely, I also seem to experience the most flavor with the Kawoodie as well.
As for the relights, my guess is I'm not packing tight enough, and indeed the draw is noticably easier with that pipe, lending to my theory on packing to light.
All in all I am enjoying this latest chapter of my life, and loving all the of my pipes as much for the differences as for the similarities.

I think you are doing just fine better to relight than do a burnout. You might try sipping a little more often if the relights bug you.

Could be a tamping issue though there are so many factors. Still, I tend to pack my pipes pretty light and I get the best smokes when I'm keeping an eye on my tamping. Its a process and what you think is your way of doing things today, will be modified tomorrow.

Sounds like you're finding your own rhythm for what works for you.
I pack quite lightly and just tamp slightly more in the first half of the bowl.

A slow puff or stream of air (nothing forceful unless you want to be covered in ashes) OUT through the pipe can help keep it lit, if you aren't ready for another intake puff.
But I agree with everyone else: relights are fine and normal, and far preferable to doing anything to make your pipe burn hot.

I will try in my Cajun way to explain how I pack, you know the example about poking your finger between thumb and forefinger for cooking a steak rare, medium, well done, well pack it for well done. Works for me.
