So, I picked this up at the Richmond show last weekend. The seller had it listed as '1930s Peterson' and told me it was 'early 30s', which appealed to me since my parents were born in 1930 and 1934.
After I got home, I did a bit of research and it turns out the pipe is actually from 1945-47. So, I was slightly miffed. Anyway, I paid $80 for it, and it's still a pretty nice looking pipe for the vintage.
Consensus - deal? no deal? meh?

Looks to be in great shape for its age and it has a nice patina.

Sorry to hear you were duped. The pipe looks great to me though, despite the incorrect age.
Stick some tobacco in it and smoke your frustration away, buddy.

Deal! The older and more smoked a Peterson the better. I don't believe that you can wear one out. This one is worth a little extra cleaning.

Peterson’s can sometimes be challenging to date, I have a few that were pretty tough to figure out, there are sometimes several factors one needs to take in account... ruling things in and out. It is possible that the seller thought he was correct, if he didn’t have all the info he needed.
It looks like you paid a fair price for a nice pipe. People have paid a lot more for new Pete’s with fills, the drilling off, and dye in the bowl.

Long as you are happy with your pipe, calabash...that is all that is important...looks to be a fine burner!

Some nice straight grain on that piece. I'd say you did well even if its age is off by a decade. If your research shows a date just after WW II I wonder if it was produced prior to the war and finished in '45. Either way it's a nice pipe. Enjoy.

It sucks being lied too, especially involving matters close to the heart. We bought our dog from a ‘breeder’, who turned out to be an at home puppy mill that mistreated the dogs. While I hope that piece of S@;t gets hers, we ended up with the most loving lap dog. Those old Pete’s were really well made.

As long as you take care of it and "baby" it a bit you should have a fine smoker for many years. In the grand scheme the more you smoke it the better the price was.

Although not as old as you expected, it is in extremely good shape. And it is an early Peterson, much better made than many later ones. Don't think about the price you paid, but the quality of the pipe you got. It's still a rare piece in excellent condition.
