Mike Murphy played the audio clip on The Pipe And Tamper Podcsat, not sure if it has been posted here....courtesy of the University Of N. Carolina.

This went into surprising detail for a 5 minute segment in a local TV program. Really a lot of good stuff in here.

Really enjoyed watching that vid. You can see a picture of how it used to be back in the 50's...the work ethic is obvious.

I looked at it & thought that it was they way it was working today. Have had several in the past but the video makes me want to buy another new one to support the employees in NC. Great people.

Not trying to Highjack Charlies thread, but here is a clip from a US Tobacco production titled Simple Pleasures from 1976, and when Dr. Grabow was part of US Tobacco. This part and the rest of the production aired on television (you know, when we only had 2 or 3 channels) I was about 13 or 14 and remember watching it. This was when Dr. Grabow was at it's Heyday.

Taking pride in your work is not a dead trait. Just look at Cramptholomew's pipe work.

Great video, Charlie. I didn't know that Dr Grabow pipes were made in Sparta. Ancestors on both my mother and father's sides settled in this area of NC and across the state line in VA. I'm probably related to almost everyone that works, or ever worked, at the factory. The majority of the pipes my father smoked when I was growing up were Dr Grabows, too.

Very cool videos, looks like I'm going to have to get a Dr. Grabow pipe as I currently don't have one!

Luv the video. It’s good to know/see how pipes are made, & the old timers working the machines. 🧙🏼♂️

pre-smoked is an old smoking machine method, no longer employed.

having watched that i now have a question or two about grabows. how do they smoke? and what do they mean by pre smoked??? Pre smoked meant just that. Broken in on a machine using Edgeworth Ready Rubbed tobacco. This was discontinued some time ago. As for smoking quality, they are great and reliable pipes. I collect them and smoke them regularly. Never had a bad smoke from one. The quality from the 40s / 50s / 60s is amazing.

pre-smoked is an old smoking machine method, no longer employed. This guy applied for the job when the equipment was mustered out, but the amont of the tobacco needed made it a non-starter.
