I've promised a few out there that I would put them on a list for a pipe and I did. I'm a man of his word but, sadly I can't commit to making anymore pipes for individuals anymore. I tried to get around the commission work by just taking suggestions but, its not working. I don't know why, every time I try and make a pipe for someone I'm plagued with
natural flaws in the wrong places and or just plain Jinxed, hexed what ever you want to call it, left on my own
I can turn out a pretty decent pipe like the last one I posted here. I have one gentleman I making a pipe for right now and he's the last person I make one for. Hope the others on the list will understand. I'm still be making pipes and will post them here and my website for sale.

You do what you need to do . I think that everybody will understand. You have always made great pipes.

Art often doesn't turn out well when it comes off a production line. I know a hardwood furniture craftsman/artist who says the same thing. He doesn't take orders anymore, he just makes what speaks to him at the time. His pieces are beautiful and sell at a steady rate.
So I agree... you should do what works for you.

If people like your pipes, they'll buy what you make. I have no doubt that anything you make will sell in a heartbeat, no matter what shape or look it has.

I agree with all that you said...and like Stearmandriver, believe that you will do just fine, regardless of sand pits and whatever flaw you find, it will still be from the heart and still be something that you made, and that is what we all want when being fortunate to have something from your blessed hands.

This is me as well. I believe in letting the craftsman do his/her thing. It always turns out better that way.

Last week I asked Ron to make me:
A bulldublin canadian
Reverse calabash squat tomato with amber stem
A Tyrolean prince with five different stems
A bent pipe with a removable shank with the ability to be a straight pipe
And three other innovative types for a unique 7 day set.
I got him to crack.

It's one of my best pipes, Ron! I've been waiting for a long time for the chance to snag another. Might be a lot of competition though.

As an artist [oil paint , etc.] I totally get this , as I constantly get requests for certain types ... It just doesn't work like that for me . Humbly submitted

Humbly submitted I was an artist as a young man, mainly sketches (being colorblind) and I'd get requests to do particular things and I had to tell them I couldn't just draw at a whim what they wanted because I had to be in the mood to do that subject. I always wanted to be a commercial artist but, having that block kept me from it. If I had the money at the time to go to a good art school they may have trained me out of that block and I would have been somebody, I don't know. No way to cure colorblindness but, maybe a way around it.
It never crossed my mind till you brought it up that my problem still may lie in having that block still.

Yes Ron , that's very interesting ... I just go where ever each piece of music / art take me . Intriguing

That's french for "That's life". (C'est la vie). Kids today may say "whatever". I recall, "That's the way the cookie crumbles" and other coloquialisms.
