I probably pack lighter than I should, but I find that it works for me.
But I do notice that my first tamp takes me down about a quarter way into the bowl.
Is that the same with you guys?

Most of the time I don't use a tamper other than my index finger and that is rare. For the most part I turn the pipe upside down just to get rid of the ash and continue onward.

I tamp very lightly every few minutes. Seems to work well for me.

My first tamp generally takes me just below the rim. You're definitely packing looser than I do, but there's more than one way to skin a cat.

I kind of have the stuff and puff method down pretty good now that I figured out the draw where I like it. I generally end up a 1/4 down from the rim after initial light.

Got to tell you my mind is clicking away on your post, thought about Old Bill, always had a great story, he was diddling this gal on the beach, missed a stroke, got sand on his diddle, girl told him Bill put it back in the sand it cuts like a new file.! Don’t know how this relates to tamping, but tamping is tamping, guess Wife is right I’m going crazy.

I do the same, but I tamp more firmly near the top of the bowl. Might burn a little faster but for me it is a much smoother smoke; no obstruction and easy air flow.

For me, the first tamp is the leveling of the burn of the raised baccy. Then I relight and lightly tamp to level it all and start smoking. It's usually my third tamp that gets to about a 1/4" below the rim. I continue to tamp as needed but lightly till the bowl is all smoked.

Nope, first tamp may get me a 1/16" of a inch down. As the owner of Pipes Magazine says, "tamp very, very, lightly"
