First impressions from a novice pipe smoker.
This was loose (ribbon cut?) tobacco blend Purchased bulk.
Interestingly enough, though this is what the tobacconist called this, I cant find any references to this name for a Mac Baren blend. I do find a Sutliff medium English that looks exactly like this, so this might be that. When I smelled it in the jar, I specifically asked if what I thought was the Latakia in it was. He said yes.
I enjoyed this smoke, though the bowl died near the end and I had to surrender more dottle than I like. I prepared the tobacco as I have very recently started doing with all my smokes. I take an approximation of what I think one bowl will be and place it loosely in an 8 OZ jar, I leave that open to the air overnight letting it dry out a bit. This one was open to the air for about 28 hours, much longer than I've read on here for most, but still quite acceptably moist to me while being dry enough that relights were only necessary if I didn't mind my pipe.
First impressions:
I could just taste the Latakia, (which is what I was looking for when I picked this blend) I'm not sure how best to describe the flavor, but here was my impression.
The note was subtle, for my novice senses. I suppose one would normally call this a smoky taste, but I relate that description to Camp fire or hickory smoke, and this was different.
I wracked my brain for about half the bowl trying to place the flavor / aroma of the experience. Finally it hit me. This tobacco has a mild (for me) but distinctly noticeable flavor reminiscent of the forest floor back home in Southern Oregon after an autumn rain. This is what I would call an earthy, mossy experience. I may have noticed just a hint of spicy, peppery note, but it was almost imperceptible to me.

You've done a great job in your first review. Nice work. Sounds like I would enjoy this blend.

You've done a great job in your first review. Nice work. Sounds like I would enjoy this blend. Thank you. My next will either be the Plum Cake, or what is rapidly becoming a favorite for me - Nutty Irishman. I rather enjoy just sitting and contemplating the experience when I smoke, so I'm happy i was able to convey my impression well enough.

I find that when I am smoking to review a blend, it makes me slow down and concentrate on what I'm doing. Looking forward to your review on plum cake.

Very nice review, clear and concise. I don't do reviews, I suck at them
