After years of being filterless, I've gone to using balsa filters in my Savs. I like it - it rounds of the flavor nicely. My question is: I'm breaking the pipes apart so often to replace the filters that I'm worried about damage to the pipes. Is this a legit fear? This is not meant to be a thread debating the merits of filters.

I have a few pipes that take either 6mm or 9mm filters. I use Savinelli balsa filters for both. I don't use filters that much but Savinelli filters are the best as far as I'm concerned. After smoking a bowl when the pipe is cool I always pull the stem out and remove the filter, give it a squeeze with a paper towel to remove some moisture and set them aside to dry. After I've used them roughly 5-6 times I toss them and go for a new one. Never had a problem with them or the pipes. If your stems are hard to remove, get some beeswax and rub it on the tenon, that will make them easier to remove. Hopes this helps somewhat.

Not only squeeze the moisture out as above, then 60 seconds in the microwave. Before nuking, I scrape them with scissors edge and trim each end a smidgen.

Not going to hurt the pipe to take it apart as long as you are careful.

Not going to hurt the pipe to take it apart as long as you are careful. ... and you’ve let the pipe cool down before taking it apart.
