Hope I'm asking this question in the correct forum. Most of the pipes I have and smoke, have a 2" inner bowl depth, with one having a 3 inch inner depth. My question is when smoking a bowl, and the pipe going out for one reason or just letting it go out, I've tried relighting the bowl after a simple tamp, but seem to have better results if I use the poker on my pipe tool to loosen the ash then pouring it out, then relighting from that point. When I use the poker on my pipe tool, I can see and feel it going through at least half the bowl before any resistance of unburned tobacco. So I want to ask if you dump ash and then relight, or if you fight through the ash to relight it?

My typical answer to this type of question is..Do what works best for you..I just tamp and relight.

I dump the ash, tamp a little and relight. If I leave the ash I find it harder to get a good light.

I don't have any pipes with bowls deeper than 1 1/2 " and smoke only Va's which smoke dry all thru the bowl so don't have that problem. I just tamp, relight all the way thru the bowl and when done just dump the nice grey ash !

I just tamp the ash down unless i notice an ashy taste or if im outside sometimes i give a light blow over the top of the bowl to free it from ash.

I dump the ash and relight. Works for me. Sometimes I give a wee stir of the loose tobacco too and treat it like a new bowl with charring light etc.

I use a turbo torch with the Frank Method,so the flames penetrate down through the tobacco.

You can also run a pipe cleaner through the stem and shank; that creates a little bit of an air pocket in the bottom of the bowl and really opens up the flow without having to dump the bowl out.

Because I'm efficient (lazy) I always try to tamp and relight first. If this produces less than desirable results, I'll dump some ash, tamp er down and relight.
In the end, I do what I find works best for me.

For me, the best smoke is the undisturbed smoke, so I put off scooping ash as long as possible. When needed, I dump the loose ash, but don't get hung up on removing it all, as some ash aids the relight.

Removing the ash will permit air to reach the fire, keeping the pipe lit longer. But, be careful to not disturb the embers themselves.
