At night I go on porch, used to be darkness, frogs croaking , coyotes howling, fireflies light up the darkness, now lights from nearby subdivisions are invading my sight, no red eyes of foxes trying to steal a chicken, when I bushhogg rabbits don’t jump out of pasture and run away. no fireflies, it’s like a plague, civilization creeping up, little town where I got my farmhouse and moved it on the farm voted on whether citizens could keep chickens, people up tight so much the only place I go to is the feed store, last time I went to the Academy a fuss up about a parking space nearly ended up in a young mans demise if he would have approached my truck any closer, don’t go to town, wife does my errands, the only paradise I have is my porch, I love Buddy my dog, I talk to him and he doesn’t talk back, I like that. Creeping urbanization is a threat to rural communities. Enjoy what you have as it will not last. When I moved here, just outside a village of 180 in rural northern NM, the folks here were disturbed that another outsider had moved in. This village had been isolated from the world since it first settlement around 1810. A dirt road winding through the mountains linked it to the south, about 60 miles to Taos. Another dirt road led 20 miles to a small town in Colorado. Almost no one spoke English. Once a paved highway was established, people kept coming in. Communities change over time. Some call it "growth". Some call it by another name linked to the infernal regions below.

When we bought our house it was so dark on a moonless night that you might have been in a cave. Now the city lights light up the neighborhood even when we have a local power outage. We still have critters from the creek and wildlife preserve adjacent to our property, just no stars.

I had that once too, and the same things happened there, that and every Yahoo from out of state started moving in to have there little piece of the country as they call it. Guns blasting off constantly, car horns, idiots racing up and down the road, etc. Now I live in a little town of 418 and it seems this new breed of Texan (and its a shame to call them Texan) has the same ideas. They act more like city slickers on a joy ride with there heads up there rear impervious to anyone around and could care less. And here's whats really sad, when I lived in Calif. with neighbors feet away from me, it was quitter, calmer and much less headaches to deal with then the way Texas has become in the last 7-10 years. I think the only way anyone can find peace of mind anymore is to be wealthy enough to move way out in the sticks and plant yourself in the middle of 100 or more acres that you own with a 20 foot fence all the way around and surveillance with gun turrets.

I'm in agreement with both Oldcajun and Ron...I'm fortunate enough to own a small piece of land with quiet neighbors all but for one...she is loud, but that is her normal speaking voice. A good friend owns the 2 close properties and he makes a point of renting only to quiet people (as a favor to me)...my next door neighbor is separated from me with about 80' of woods...it gives me the illusion of living in the country even though I live about 5 minutes from town. I have lots of squirrels, hawks, the usual birds and some huge owls...that is my country living.

In the nineties I flew my family into Baltimore to visit family in DC...immediately after walking out the door of the airport, we were being sized up as potential victims...thug central.
When we did go to DC on the 4th we rode metro rail, and were all sunburned... there were a bunch of punk arse 20 something year olds (looked like staffers), that were drunk and barfed on sis in law. When she railed on the guy, one of the others slapped her young son on his sunburn.... none of us knew which one it was, they all had turd eating grins.

It’s said a lot of the homeless have mental problems, I say help those, reinstate mental hospitals, the rest grab em and put them in chain gangs work their asses off for a couple months then turn em loose, then a regular job would look like a vacation. No excuse not to work, been doing it since I was 12 yrs old! give the jobless the job of building homes for the homeless, make the homeless pay for a home buy growing food for the hungry ,make the hungry learn a trade and work at it to get the food grown by the homeless...stop giving away the fish , and teach the bums to fish!!!

I hear you Goldbrick, but they don't want to learn how to fish, they want you to catch it, clean it, and bring it to them. Some may want you to cook it for them.!

We get some of those dumbasses from Texas near here visiting Red River. Amazingly bad attitudes. Speeding, reckless driving, insulting locals, waiving guns around. I am sorry they are here and wish they would stay in their own state.
