I LOVE the smell of carburetor cleaner in the morning! Smells like Victory!
Oh yeah ... right up there with Hoppe's #9. Hell, I use to use it for after shave, real bracing and a real man smell!

My wife will let me smoke latakia blends all day long, but she can't tolerate the smell of Hoppes #9. It's her only fault. However, all of my guns are getting pretty dirty.

Just finished working on my van. It all started because I had a brake line rust out so..... I ended up replacing every single brake line, all 4 brake hoses, replaced the rear anti-lock brake sensor, replaced the differential fluid, all 4 brake pads including 1 brake caliper, both outer tie rod ends, both tie rod sleeves, front and rear shocks, changed the oil, set the toe and rotated the tires and finished up with a good undercoating of NH oil.. Then I did my yearly maintenance check on my truck: rotated the tires, replaced front brake pads, replaced the inner and outer wheel bearings, took off rear drums and cleaned the shoes and re-lubed the contact points, took the ignition module of the distributor and added some heat sink compound, changed the oil and then sprayed undercoating, sanded down my tailgate, primed it and will spray it tomorrow.

Thanks guys. I do all my own car repairs because I just don't like getting ripped off by car repair shops that usually do a half -arse job and charge way too much money. Even with buying special tools for each job its still cheaper than taking it somewhere.

Not in the same league with Randy, but I did re-wire the wire cutter grid on my under counter ice machine this evening. Interesting process where you literally strum the wire to tighten it up across the grid. It is supposed to be making ice as we speak. We shall see.

I decided to change a thermostat on our 1990 Aerostar some years back... easy access , no problem. Barely a twist of the socket and the bolt snapped... my buddy had a Snap on easy out... no problem? Then that broke off, now I had a case hardened chunk of metal in an aluminum intake manifold.
For me it is all cool when plans work out... sucks donkey balls when it doesn’t and that critical bolt falls from your fingers at 1AM and disappears somewhere in the frame of the car.
Jay Leno type wrenching I think that I would enjoy though.
I have a buddy that worked for the dealerships and got tired of seeing people get ripped off, he works out of his house and charges very fair prices and his knowledge base over a wide range of vehicles allows him to pinpoint problems on my cars far sooner than me. I can work a few hours at work and pay a guy that earns every penny.

I've only seen one of those in the time I've been repairing equipment and didn't get to see it work because the compressor was bad and they just replaced the machine.

Not too old, eight years I think. It is a KitchenAid, 18” wide, made by Whirlpool. I think you can buy them new, but they are getting expensive. I am going to have to repair or replace the water circulating pump, as it is leaking and stops the whole process. Interesting machines.

I thought it was a commercial version. They stopped using the hot wire set up some time ago in commercial ice machines. I have this 1950's Scotsman flaker machine with a Galaxie Coca Cola dispensing head that I need to get off my butt and get running.

Ours is the one real luxury item we put in our kitchen remodel some 14 years ago. The machine was replaced once with a bad compressor. Other than that it has been a few small parts.

I can work a few hours at work and pay a guy that earns every penny. My brother and I just had this conversation. He said, "aren't you making over $XX per hour now? Just pay someone to do it for you"! Well, that day isn't too far off but I'll continue to perform any and all repairs that I'm capable of until then. Just because I have the money doesn't mean I want to hand it over to the tune of $70-90 bucks per hour. People in charge of keeping you alive during hospital stays don't even make that much.

I've got a few projects going on right now.
1) Building a desk 2) Getting ready to start building some window boxes for flowers. This was a request from my better half. 3) Finished cleaning the throttle body on my 2004 Nissan Frontier last night.

Just because I have the money doesn't mean I want to hand it over to the tune of $70-90 bucks per hour. People in charge of keeping you alive during hospital stays don't even make that much. I don't really have any money to spare, but things I used to do I just can't do anymore. Having the Wing set up for almost 4 years and the joy of getting it back on the road negates the pain of the $2k I just spent on it. About to spend a couple of grand more on getting the trees removed from the driveway and getting the concrete repaired. I have needed this done for the 14 years we've lived here. I have always done my own electrical work, but I am about to pay a pro to fix the mess under the house left by the previous owner. It is a comfort to know that the Social Security check is going to be in the account every month. The 401k and the wife still working makes up for the rest. We really haven't had to touch the 401k in the last 2 years. If you don't have a retirement account get one and max out your contributions. You will be glad you did. I am still working on fixing up my shop a little bit at a time. I will then be able to work on small projects that don't stress me out. I have a first class Gold Wing mechanic and 2 vehicles that do not break down. If they start to break down they will go away.

I just hacked a hotel room thermostat on Kauai to turn off energy saving mode, so it'll run the AC all night, even when I'm sleeping deep enough to not trigger the motion detector.
Small victories.

Getting ready to put a new window regulator in the driver's side of the wife's Honda Pilot. Fortunately, there are good videos online for the procedure. It definitely helped me avoid missing a screw or busting the retaining pins.

I hear you, for me it comes down to time also, there are a lot of things that the wife cannot physically do around the house that require me to do... thankfully my cars are very dependable and only require routine maintenance for the most part... I am not going to pay someone $80 an hour to replace a serpentine belt, or a cabin air filter, but an oil change is cheaper done at Big O for $20, and I don’t have to cart the oil off to the parts store hoping that their tank isn’t already full. I’m not saying that I don’t ever do my own work, it is just selectively done.

It definitely helped me avoid missing a screw or busting the retaining pins. My buddy has had to change those on his Pilot 3 or 4 times. We used to fix all the cars, rebuild engines and outboard motors and everything. We know how but the flesh is weak. As long as we can afford repairs we will pay for them. I only change the oil on our cars in good weather because I can put synthetic oil from Walmart in cheaper than the Jiffy Lube can put in regular oil. Changing oil is easy enough to be the only thing I do anymore. If I need a headlight bulb changed on my truck it will be at the dealership.
