question about using filters in pipes first of all what is there true purpose? to eliminate tars and nicotine's or to cool the smoke? secondly can you use them with any pipe or does the pipe have to be made to be used with a filter?? how much do filters affect the way a pipe smokes?

Purpose is to absorb moisture Pipe needs to be made for filters generally Just adds a little more resistance to the draw. Disclaimer - these are just my opinions, as it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than speak up and remove all doubt.

As I get more experience I've started going with non-filtered pipes or putting in a filterless converter in my pipes that have filters.

I have mostly non filter pipes, but do have a couple filtered with 9mm. You generally cannot put filters in non filter pipes, but you can smoke filter ready pipes without filters. Using a carbon type filter (Vauen) I din't experience much hindrance on the draw and taste is about same as without. Smoke will be a bit cooler when it hits the mouth.
