I just bought a new camera, well new to me anyway, a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H300 20.1MP. Yes, it's an older model, I can't afford a new one UNLESS you guys start buying pipes! Anyway, as you may have noticed my photos are getting worse and lets face it I'm using a Sony CD-1000 that has only I think 2.5 MP and it's the one that takes the mini CD's not a memory card. I do have a Shamcy Fancy Olympus DSLR camera but, it have so many settings and there contradictory that I just can't get it to take a decent photo so......... Anyone here have any experience with the newer Sony I've purchased, hope its good and if its bad I think it better to keep it to yourself so I don't blow a gasket for spending so much money, $81 with shipping and yes, that's a lot to me. And I mean that seriously, did my research on it but, as you know there's always a few nimrods that either don't how to take a picture or just didn't read the instructions that leave bad reviews. The good reviews out weighed the bad so I hope I'll not have any problems.

Well then, good luck! FWIW: I thought your pictures were fine. They use to be better and the camera has been acting up a lot lately, setting buttons doing the opposite of what they should do and so on. Hey, it's gotta be 20 years old by now and for anything electronic doesn't usually have that good of a self life. Not going to wait till it dies and I'm left without, that would be worse.

I thought your pictures were fine as well. You took some pretty good pictures with the old camera so I expect you'll be great with this one. Just remember , in the day, pros were using the camera you have just purchased.

The really bright side is you’re not having to use 35mm film! Think how far we’ve come in the last 40 years as regards marketing artisan products!

Good luck, Ron! I know what you mean...I've got a little Panasonic Lumix (do they still make those things?) that I can just about get to take a picture, and they are usually lousy (my framing is really poor) but at least I can take a picture...sometimes.
I always thought your pictures were pretty good!

Perry, researching this camera I was led to believe its a point and shoot type and not another DSLR like the one I have stash in the closet.
All I use to use were SLR's my first camera was a German made all manual SLR (can't remember the name to save my life) and then I got a Canon AE1 which was a great camera but, it seems the new DSLR's are confusing to me and I just can't get the settings right.
I hope I haven't gotten another boat anchor.

I've used it for over 40 years and still find it gives better images than digital! I still use my Nikkormat I got back in '69 and it works flawlessly!

Nothing wrong with them sir, its just when posting photos of a pipe I just finished I have to wait for them to be developed or go the cost of an enlarger, chemicals, negative developing canisters, etc. This way I get my photo now.
And just as a side note, I had an old 120 that also took great photos but, you have the same problem with developing.

Ah, I found it, Sony DSC-H300 Overview The black Sony Cyber-shot DSC-H300 Digital Camera is a point-and-shoot camera featuring a 20.1 MP 1/2.3" Super HAD CCD image sensor for producing high resolution still imagery and HD 720p video. Thank God, you had me a little scared there Perry.

You missed my point entirely. If we were restricted to using film for photos and print media for advertising, the whole process of marketing pipes is far more difficult for the carver. The last 40 years has seen a fundamental shift in the ability to market goods as a result of the digital revolution writ large. That was my point. Nothing about the quality of film or film cameras. FWIW I too still have my old Nikkormat. As rugged a camera as there ever was.

Last SLR was a Cannon EOS Rebel G. Had a Nikon digital for a while, but just fell by the wayside. I've just been using a phone for years now.

Thanks for clarifying that Ron. Point and shoots are certainly a lot simpler to use. 20 MP is quite good. That's what most DSLRs are today (unless you want to spend 5K for 40MP). Looking forward to seeing the pictures with it.

May I just say I'd rather have 2.5 million good pixels than 40 million mediocre ones. The lens still makes a difference.
And the resolution and dynamic range of digital cameras surpassed film over ten years ago. Film is still great, but for dedicated hobbyists and those who love 8 track tapes, VHS, foldable maps, and turntables.

I have ALL four of those and more, you forgot Reel-Reel and Cassettes, although I do own some CD's. Also have telephones you actually Dial with your finger.

I can't wait to see how much better your photos will be. But I didn't think they could be any better. Well, maybe my eyes are failing instead of my photos but, the trouble I've been having with the camera isn't getting better so better to replace it now then after it dies and I need it.

That's the problem with us older folks, it may be our eyes that can't see as good as they used to, but still your pictures look pretty darn good to these old eyes....and certainly your workmanship is still outstanding!

It's all in the lens. If it's a nice lens, it will take good pictures. If it's an inexpensive lens, it will look like your phone.

With today's technology I don't doubt it sir but, I still don't want one. I lived my whole life without one, why do I need one now? I have enough crapola and the Government knows way too much about now as it is. Thanks but, No Thanks!

I'm not trying to talk you—or anyone— into a phone or anything else! I agree most of us have way too much stuff... Me, very guilty, but then I like all that new stuff.

John

I prefer the older stuff, too...quality metal solid feeling stuff...I miss the older cars prior to plastic dashboards, plastic crap, etc.

Well if you really want to go down the rabbit hole, I could say that you need a good computer monitor to actually see if your camera pics look great.
But I digress...
