I ALWAYS RUN INTO THESE GUYS.... Theyre always standing out front of malls, walmarts, grocery stores, you name it. Cigarette in hand, sometimes a cigar. Never run into a pipe smoker this way. I guess we come prepared. But theyre always asking for a light, and always got more to tell you after you've finished giving it to them. Usually I enjoy the conversation, but I know some people are ignored. Most people these days probably ignore folks like this, but I am just too kind and gentle of a soul... I gotta help em out, you know? So patchers... anyone gotta light?

I make a point of avoiding those people. There is usually a hustle that comes along. Now that I walk with the aid of a stout cane, they leave me alone.

I think that I look near homeless most of the time so they dont ask me for money

When I go out these days, half the time I either look homeless or trouble. I have a resting angry face that doesn't really show how I am feeling, but it cuts down on the crap outside of the stores and at gas stations. Inside the stores I am all smiles, reaching the top shelf for little old ladies, picking up dropped pacifiers, and talking to the other shoppers over the tomatoes. Out the door and don't F with me. I give to the Salvation Army throughout the year so I don't do the kettle thing.

Like Ron...this too, looks a lot like me..."When I go out these days, half the time I either look homeless or trouble. I have a resting angry face"...I'm neither homeless nor looking for trouble, but I'm always on the lookout to try to avoid it if possible. Yeah...too many crazies out there.

When I was in gran canaria, it was after midnight and I was asked for a light by an attractive lady, who started tickling my balls as I was lighting her cigarette. I was like, 'what the hell?'
My friend was doubled over laughing...
'That was a man,' he said.

Usually if someone just asks me in a straightforward way for a buck, I give it. It is the bullshite hustle I do not care for. The phony stories about cars breaking down on their way to the church, they were just released from the ER, their children were seized by the authorities, they need bus fare to __________ (fill in the blank) (there is no bus service from Taos anymore). I can feel the con oozing out of them.

When I open carry a sidearm, nobody asks me for squat...I need to open carry more often.
Like john, Legitimate needs I am willing to help out, most requests are suspicious at best...I have seen the same panhnadlers working the same corners for weeks, months, years.
There is a homeless guy that voluntarily dumps the trash at the gas pumps at a Circle K convenience store that I stop at by my work...a few times I have given a twenty to the clerk and told them to give it to him after I leave....that is a good feeling to help someone out.

Now that I have to walk with a cane I get doors held open for me and even offers to help me get my bags to the car! (We have several grocery stores around here that fix their carts so that they can't leave the stores!) What I call would be "bad" guys seem to make room for me to get by as a cane can be a bad weapon to deal with !

However, I just got a deal on a sword cane for Cyber Monday.

In the town of Toad, I had a woman pull up behind me and honk her car' horn as I slowly crossed the parking lot aisle. No one holds doors. Certainly no one helps me with bags. I always use a cart so I guess that helps. People bump into me, get under my feet or cane so I almost trip. When my eye was bandaged, it was worse as I could not see to the left side. In Sana Fe at Trader Joe's, A lady with a cart dashed in front of me to get to the check out clerk, knocking my cart out of the way. I am clearly in the way of other people and they do not like it. This is too bad for them I shall continue to inconvenience them. BTW, those offenders are entirely Anglos and probably from some place else. No New Mexican would act that way. Just an interesting difference in people.

My observation in life, the poor are always kinder, when I was cast netting at the dams, the ones who helped each other were the poor. One time the wife and I were cast netting on a dam that was man made across an inlet to the marsh, it was about 40 ft long and spacing between people was about 5 ft so you could throw your net. A big sportfisherman pulls up to dam, 3 correctly dressed sportsman in it, one jumps up on dam and worms in between wife and I , I casually arrange my 7 ft net with 10 lbs of lead weights and swing it catching him upside of the head, down he went, I told the other 2 in the boat, you got to wait your turn and if you would have asked I would have given you shrimp so you could go fishing, but you entitled pricks slip over in. The guy I whacked slowly got back in the boat and away they went, the people on the dam applauded me, I hate line jumpers.

Always some a$$hole trying to push their way in between people...line jumpers is a nice way of saying it.

I've not had any MALE gen xers or millenials show this type of consideration.
