Okay, which flake tobacco and which plug would you recommend for a beginner? Preferable in the mild to medium range with pleasant room note -- I can't choke hubby out of the house, lol.

I highly recommend Orlik Golden Sliced. It is mild. Smokes well, stays lit. A very approachable flake that is affordable and readily available.

You could try some Vanilla Flakes for the room note and still keep it mild to medium. Vanilla Cream Flake or Black Vanilla Flake come to mind.

I agree to all the above, and would add Erinmore Flake (citrusy and mild) and the other two Stokkebye flakes: Luxury Navy Flake (grassy, haylike with a hint of citrus) and Luxury Bullseye Flake (cream and vanilla). Most of the flakes suggested are also inexpensive - the Stokkebye flakes come in bulk. I've never had a plug that was mild to medium, but when I read reviews you see the same tobacco rated mild by some and strong by others, so I would recommend GL Pease's Gaslight (rich and lots of latakia, probably hubby-choking). Don't think you could go wrong with any of the above; bet you'll like some quite a bit

Orlik Golden Slices is a classic Virginia/perique flake and a very nice room note. Peter Stokkebye Luxury Twist Flake has a coconut flavoring that is also very pleasant. It can also be bought in bulk so a 2oz pack would be enough for you to play with and see if yu like it. I'd hold off on plugs for a while until you decide what you like in a blend. Plugs take prep time and experimenting with how you want to load them in your pipe. They generally burn cooler and last longer in the bowl if you handle them the right way.

Orlik Golden Slices was the first flake I ever had. It is still my go to for a flake like everyone has said its worth checking out. I also like it because its reasonably priced.

I would recommend starting with MacBaren Old Dark Fired or Latakia Flake, or Stokkebye Luxury Navy Flake.

I would suggest some Luxury Navy Flake, Luxury Bullseye Flake or Luxury Twist Flake. All three are mild to medium and are sold in bulk you could also look at Newminster Superior Navy Flake, they also have a bulleye flake #403 I don't remember the name. Now Comoy has 2 that are tinned Cask#4 and Cask#7.
Hope this helps John R

As you don't want a lot of nicotine in your tobaccos, I suggest OGS, Capstan Blue (I prefer it over the Gold), Wessex Brigade Campaign Dark Flake, and Dunhill Flake.

Maggie, I'll have tins of OGS and Capstan Blue headed your way in the morning. Enjoy.

A lot of VA flakes are nice and mild but I found that plugs often have way too much Vitamin N for my taste. They keep knocking me off my feet... I love everything latakia too but the roomnote might bestow some marital problems on you.

Hi, I started out with Petersons University (medium to strong) flake & Petersons Irish ( strong) Flake & Robert McConnell Scottish ( medium) flakes . They are all excellent smokes from medium to strong, & pleasant to tolerable room note, but they'll can be mixed in proportion with a mild blend, I like to mix with Clan, bye for now.

Just a thought , a lot of heavy smokers started out on strong nicotine cigarettes, so are used to a heavy hit, but I vary my use, I never smoked cigarettes & like a lot on this forum , I have smoked a pipe for over thirty years, if I smoke a pipe of strong tobacco , I only take a few puffs at a time, not like aromatics constantly, with a long milk Shake & some spring waters on the table. The downside of smoking strong cigarettes or pipe tobaccos excessively is that you can lose your taste completely, but it returns slowly on fasting for a time, the best practise is to smoke slowly & in moderation & to fast & abstain periodically, as you know, but just my opinion for reference :-)

Thank you, Motto, for the sound advice. I will try to be conscience of cadence when I puff the Uni Flake. I'm grateful for your wisdom indeed.
