isett2860 Charlie did it two years ago, I did it last year, and I'm wondering if anyone wants to run it this year. Charlie's out, I'm out unless absolutely no one else wants to do it, so...are we doing the Secret Santa and if so, who wants to volunteer?

The mods discussed this earlier, but we noticed that last time it was stated in October so we thought that we might have missed the boat this year, unfortunately.

I never participated in anything like that. Is that like drawing a name out of a hat?

Sorry David, It wasn’t me who did it. I just have participated.. No position in life right now to take it on

He lives near Iwan Reis, I think that he should just be everyone's Santa, with all of us kids putting our individual $100 wish list of products on our letter to Santa. How about we call a vote on this?

I think it is way to late to do this, unless everyone would be ok with receiving their secret santa stuff after the holiday.
Might be best to wait until next year, but I leave that to the group to decide.

Just a thought and not sure how to go about it. Is there anyone here that we know, that could use a little Christmas cheer. Maybe they are new or are having a rough go of it at this time. This coming weekend would probably need to be the cut off.
Pick a point person to PM recommendations to. And then those interested could contact the point person and get a name?
I’ve never done anything like this and have no idea how to go about it. But some of you may have done something like this in the past and would know how to start.

Yeah, it's way too late unless folks are willing to get their gifts after Christmas (which would still mean we didn't skip a year). First, someone has to volunteer to run it. Then, they establish a cut off date for folks to sign up to be a Santa. Folks sign up and send their mailing address to the organizer. When the cut off date arrives, the organizer secretly matches each Santa to another Santa, to be the Santee, and keeps track of everyone who has sent and everyone who has received. That way, everyone participating both gives and receives a gift. I think we had a two tin minimum last year? Santas generally don't get to pick their Santee, and the Santa is a secret to the Santee (though they often figure it out). The organizer has to be fluent in Excel, or at least know how to use a paper and pencil spreadsheet, to keep track of every outgoing and incoming gift, so no one gets skipped. You'll make mistakes and that's ok. I'm not sensing a ton of community interest, and I think we'll have to skip this year. Maybe I'll bring it up again next October

I’m definitely a ‘yea’ on Secret Santa whether or not it’s too late and I am a ‘yea’ for Secret Santa next year.
May I suggest a standard gift for/from everybody such as a pipe smoker’s care package?
I’m thinking a high quality, clean, new or used good smoking pipe, some samples of favourite cellared blends, a small case or drawstring bag, a tamper, a pack of cleaners, and a souvenir ashtray from your city or some other small object of tobacciana.

Kram, the CARE package you suggested is awesome, but out of a lot of peoples' budget. I think we had a two tin (ot equivalent) minimum last year. Also unfortunately, we have an issue with Canadian customs. Last year, my Canadian guy sent a package, but never received his at all

Just to throw this out there. I have always had a hard time giving up my unopened tins/pouches. Because the only reason I have any unopened is because I like it and have not gotten to it in my celler. I would be more open to gifting a restored estate pipe or two then my tobacco. So I would be more inclined to participate if that was a option. Don't know if that makes me a Scrooge or not, but thought I would throw that out there. 😀

The organizer has the final say, but of course everyone would be fine with a gift pipe, no worries there; the tins were just a suggestion

Although, sending no tobacco and limiting gifts to pipes, accessories or objects of pipe kitsch would make it easier for shipping through customs.

I was just telling the Mrs about our secret Santa issue. She said “why don’t you skip it and plan a St Patricks day exchange. Leprechauns smoke pipes!” Told her I’d throw that idea out to the others. (I hate when she thinks more creatively than me)

If we do a St Patrick Day thing. We have to figure out how we can get our resident leprechaun included. It would only be right. Yes Paddy, I’m talking about you😃

I'm in... However, I think to get around customs issues, whoever has me on their list would need to purchase said gift from a UK supplier. Likewise, I'd purchase my gift from a USA supplier. That way we're not dealing with customs issues. Just a suggestion.
