How many of you say you smoke for the flavor? Me I have smoked for so long I can say I smoke for the Nic.

One vote for flavor. I wimp out on nic bombs. C&D Exhausted Rooster and Kajun Kake top out my tolerance level and they're only occasional indulgences.

Hi, I pipesmoke for flavour, mainly light aromatics, mixed half & half, with favourite pinches of sliced plug or rope to flavour a mix. I try lots of top taditional & modern blends of all sorts to compare taste & aroma note, then after I have enjoyed a number of tins , I mix the remains of the tins into various mixed blends of my own & jar them, I never smoked cigarrettes so never liked a nicotine hit, bye.

I'd say half and half (not the blend). After 46 years of pipes and cigars my taste buds are fried.

It is both for enjoying the flavor and for the relaxing effect of the whole ritual. It is a form of meditation for me. I don't mind a little nicotine hit, but not too heavy.

my interest is in the aroma and like don said, for the ritual of it. i prefer to stay away from as much nicotene as i can, which is why i use filters.

I used to have a buddy who smoked two packs of Marlboros a day and, when he ran out of cigs, couldn't get any nic hit from my pipe tobaccos no matter how hard he puffed. I don't remember what I gave him, though.
I'll admit I started smoking pipes because of Tolkien, and they made me happy. I enjoy the ritual and flavor, which is why I'll always prefer flakes because of the extra work. Plus, you get to buy pipes! and assembling your collection is fun. You can go through a catalog of cigars and have no idea which ones you will like, though you might marvel at the editor's ability to describe each one differently, but go through a catalog of pipes, and you can tell immediately which ones tug your heart, though you might not know why.
To smoke a cigar, you just need a flame; to smoke pipes you need tools! Mmm, tools.
Remember the great quote from my tobacconist: Cigarettes are an addiction, cigars are a hobby, pipes are a religion!

Side note to Don and Margaret: He's the same guy that takes his dog to work, so how bad could he be? However, not just that, but when he went down the street to get a haircut, said he left the dog in charge. Except he wasn't kidding; when he got back, folks had left him little notes: Bought two ounces of this, two ounces of that, here's a twenty. Said they'd even made their own change from the change drawer. Great guy.
Back to the OP's topic: Pipes for me are way more than the flavor - you don't see guys on cigarette.com arguing whether Camels are better than Pall Malls, or asking the best way to light a Chesterfield. Look everyone; I went to Indonesia and brought back some Djarums!
My mom's dad was gassed in the trenches of WWI, and came back with classic PTSD - was prone to quick and random violence, and was always getting fired from his minimum wage-type jobs for hitting his boss. He was always poor, and never had any nice things. He'd yell at the children, and they'd dread the sound of his key in the lock. His one joy in life was his one (probably crappy) pipe, and he'd smoke and stare into the fire for hours. Now they know what he was thinking about.

Right on, Jim! Religion is a pretty good description of the whole ritual. I do some of my best thinking and creating when enjoying a pipe.

I like it for the flavor...but like John, my buds are a little crispy more from exposure to environmental issues I reckon...I just picked the pipe back up about 3 years ago after a 25+ year hiatus. If I need or want a nic-bomb...nothing gives instant gratification like snuff though...I wake up from my nightly nap on the road, and being groggy as all get out, Wilson's of Sharrow Kendall Brown lights the afterburners.

Flavor and ritual. Breaking up a flake or cutting up a rope or plug. Drying it, packing it. It forces me to slow down in an otherwise very busy life.

Well, If tobacco tasted like burning rubber no one would smoke it.......Well, most wouldn't.
So for me it's Taste and a little hug from Lady Nic.

Flavor here and relaxation...be it an smokey English with Lat or a pleasant aromatic ..I don't really go for a nic hit...I used to smoke 4 packs of camels a day and the nic chasing is over for me!

I'd say half and half (not the blend). After 46 years of pipes and cigars my taste buds are fried. I'm with John here. And that after only eight years Must be the CONDOR and 1792 Flake.
