Earlier this summer I was at my mothers doing her laundry when the two girls (sisters) came over to ask if they could use her phone as theirs wasn't working. I said sure it's on the wall in the kitchen. Iturned back to my dishes but soon realized they were not using the phone! They were just standing there looking at it and the oldest turned to me and asked "how does it work? " The phone was a turqouis wall phone with a rotary dial. It's the same phone she's had since I was in High School ( '60s) . Seems they had never seen a rotary dial phone much less used one! Made me feel old when I had to show them how to use it! Times change for sure !

Do you remember having a special ring when you had a party line where 2 or 3 people shared the same line but with different phone numbers...yes this was back in late 40's early 50's....and for you smart alec's, yes this was during the 20th century.

Haha! I have a similar story: stopped at a coffee shop in a touristy little mountain town a few years ago, decorated with antiques and stuff. Waiting for coffee, I hear my two boys say with amazement "whoa... what's THIS?" Turn to see them poking at a rotary phone. It was great.

A store in my neighborhood has a pay phone in front of it..It hasn't worked in years..A lady who works there told me that a good many folks stop and look at it..Some even have their picture taken with it.

Right, Granddaughter was amazed that during the service sometimes it was months that I didn’t receive news from home, mail rerouted, moving from ships to stations, no skype, computers, hoe did you cope Paw Paw, I didn’t know how to answer that, sometimes no news is good news.

None of these humorous remarks are far from the truth here. Land line service is quite poor owing to CenturyLunk's refusal to upgrade the ancient copper cables linking us with the switching station 22 miles away in Questa, NM. I keep the old line because it is usually the last system to fail during outages. When the power goes out, it takes the cell service with it and the internet which is a fiber cable on the same pole as the electric.
I use a push button wall phone. I had a Rotary wall phone for many years.

In the days of the rotary phone, I could leave the house and spend all day out doing whatever I wanted. Go to the beach, gone. Go drive to see where the road goes, gone. I only answer to the wife now, so I can ignore everyone else.

I remember the locks for the rotary phones. But you could override the lock by pressing the main receiver button the number of times for each number.

We have a red, rotary, wall phone in the kitchen. It still works fine for incoming calls ,but you can't call out...you're in a heck of a mess when the robot callers say "press one".
