I guess this is a newbie question: What is the one little leg on the bottom of the clay bowl for, does it have a function?๐ค ๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ

that foot is meant to be held while smoking. I thought it was like a stand, but I too am new so didnt comment. This makes more sense, as clays can get quite hot

If you smoke a clay pipe...it is a good idea to "varnish" the end where your lips go to avoid your skin from sticking to the stem.

Years ago, many of the churchwardens came painted red for about 2" from the end. It was a shiney red enamel and kept your lips from sticking to the clay stem. I saw this only on the long stemmed churchwardens not on the shorter ones.

Ive never had a clay. I think before I buy one, though, I want a true gourd calabash. True gourd is rare. Any recommendations?

that foot is meant to be held while smoking. Really? Itโs just a short little stub. I wonโt be smoking mine anyway. I got it as a show pipe in my pipe area. The first 2โ of the stem on top is coated with an orange layer. I am going to put it in a pipe stand so itโs not just laying on its side. Well I learn something new today. Thanks Papipeguy๐๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ

I want to add that my wife took it away for a Christmas present. So I only had 15 seconds to look at it to make sure it wasnโt cracked. ๐ค๐it looked OK๐๐ง๐ผโโ๏ธ

I will take a 6" clay pipe with me to our pipe club's Christmas party tonight.
If the tip of the clay pipe is not coated, you can just lick your lips before using the pipe. Or you could use chapstick. Basically, the clay is sucking the moisture on your lips.

Everyone had a great time. The place was packed. As usual, there were lots of wives there, instead of no women.
I enjoyed the clay pipe. I guess 4 or 5 small bowls are more than one normal bowl!

I got a clay from secret Santa and I have to say I am impressed. Will probably now buy more clay pipes. Virginia's really pop in this pipe.

Cleaning a clay pipe is interesting. It is put into a fire, to burn off all the dottle or anything stuck in the pipe. This does not need to be done, until the pipe no longer works. Afterwards, the pipe is back to the way it was initially, except it will be white. You probably will lose the coating at the mouth piece.
After a blending class at the last pipe show, there were lots of used clay pipes left. After putting them in the fire to clean them, some came out white and some were a mixture of white and black. I have no idea what caused that. They still work.

We use Old German Clay pipes for the blending class at the Chicago Pipe Show. They work great.

It does strengthen the part of the pipe that's most vulnerable when setting it down in an ashtray or bowl. It may also have started with the excess in the bowl mould.

Clay pipes are wonderful.
Due to the influence of a great movie I have been smoking nothing but clays for a few days now. Can't recommend them enough. All the flavor none of the cleaning. You can hold them by the stem without fear of burning the bowl out.
No you don't have to wear a tricorn hat. I mean, it helps but it is not required.

I keep four or five clay pipes on hands for trying tobacco blends the first time I buy them. They are excellent as tasting pipes because all you get is the taste of the tobacco.

I bought a used one from eBay for $90 and put a new meer bowl on it for $65. That's about as cheap as you can get one.

I have heard this is true. The explanation I heard is that the surface of the clay gets hotter than does the briar, and burns off any residue so there is never any ghosting. I will have to pay more attention and see what I taste.

I need to differentiate. I like the tavern pipe style, but I am recently enamored by the small clay pipes, six inches or so and under. I bought several about 5 inches long a while back - some kind of promotion. They went for something around $10.00 or $11.00 each.

Downsides to clay?
They are fragile pipes. I have had one or two break in my checked luggage. They likely will not survive a fall. So don't get expensive clays if you intend to carry them around.
They smoke hot. Best to hold them by the stem, as the bowl usually gets too hot to handle within a few puffs.

Another advantage of clay pipes is they do not in any way contribute to the flavor of the tobacco. You get the real true flavor.
It makes sense that clay pipes would be used for a blending class.
