I just got over it. My year and a half old caught it and he had his shot a few months ago. There are too many strains to have a magic 1 shot bullet

My wife and I never had gotten the flu shot because one year when she was working in the medical field they talked her into getting one and that was the sickest that she has ever been in her life, so last year I had the got the flu. I ended up in the hospital for a day-and-a-half which they charged 18,000 dollars to the insurance company, which luckily Medicare only had us paying about $90 of it. This year we decided to go ahead and get one. My doctor said that this year the new shots are much better and they have made great advancements so it should be a lot safer to take one.

Received a Flu SHot and encourage everyone to do the same.
Also both Pneumonia vaccines. I have had Pneumonia three times in six years and aim to never again.+
This is the 100 year aniversary of the Great Flu Epidemic which wiped out much of Yerup and killed many Americans.

I was reading about that yesturday. I will NEVER skip a flu shot again. Unless I finally move to Alaska. Because then I'll never be exposed.

I opt out of the Flu shot every year and have to lie about it being for "Religious reasons" to do so. We've seen WAY less positive Flu tests so far this year with Flu B in kids more in the lead than Flu A in adults. I just checked the CDC site and it looks like they have similar stats: www.cdc.gov/flu/weekly/index.htm

Every year its a new strain and the old shot is worthless. Got to get the new one. You'd almost think the flu was invented by pharmaceutical companies.

Agree. Flu, Pneumonia and Shingles (for us older folks). Nothing to fool around with or risk you're kids by not getting those shots.

Niece works in virology and said everyone should get the shot this year. It isn't meant to prevent getting the flu but it will help prevent dying of the flu. I get it every year but she said the strain that was down under was particularly brutal and that is usually a sign of what will happen here.

My daughter had type A, just before Christmas. I'm assuming I'm kinda immunised against that, but doc said we should get the shot to cover from type B and the others. It's only about 25% effective, but it's better than nothing.

No offense, but blogs never trump a peer-reviewed body of evidence. Notice how the "vaccines are dangerous" crowd never posts anything from the CDC or a reputable medical journal? You cannot get the flu from a flu shot. It's a dead virus. It's literally impossible. However sick you may have gotten after a flu shot, you were gonna get that sick anyway - and maybe worse. If you actually got sick from exposure to the flu around the same time you got the shot, the shot may have even minimized how ill you got and how long it lasted.

Lol ... yes, you listen to those "funded" peer-reviews. I'm not giving advice to others, only adding my own .02 cents ... as always, YMMV.

To each their own but I will continue to pass on the injection of foreign proteins into my body. Also, as a scientist myself, I'm not saying this whimsically. Perhaps if I were immunocompromised and getting sick all the time that would be different. Given the fact that my wife does the same as you, youd think she would understand why I dont get the shot. But no, on the contrary, she thinks I'm an idiot for not getting it.

I've seen more people sick this year from Rhinovirus, Coronavirus, Metapneumovirus and others than all the Influenza combined. Danger ... danger! LOL If I'd listened to the doctors about one of my patients yesterday, they would most likely be dead today. They are not gods nor superheroes and have also been "indoctrinated" by the educational system and insurance companies.

There is no magic answer, and I fully support which ever decision an individual makes for themselves. However, I myself do not get the shot. I don't trust doctors very much, and I don't trust big pharma at all. In your situation, it might be best to get a shot, and i say go for it. But I'd rather try to stay reasonably, naturally healthy and cowboy through. And yeah, we've done a lot of research on it, from both sides of the aisle.
A flu like in 1918 might come through, and if so, it might get me. That one took down a lot of healthy boys just back from WWI. But if it does, I'm not convinced a shot would head it off anyhow.

Darin I'm no scientist, or work in the field at all... but that is my general thought as well. I cant "like" your post enough right now That is where I am at...my wife was admitted to the hospital twice...in one instance the choice that the doctors made would have killed her had I not chosen to spend the night watching over her. (Valley Fever) In the second instance she was more in control and the doctors poo-pooed her complaint, she finally raised hell and the right doctor reacted, had it not happened she was on the rails to the morgue. (Broken Femur) One of my co-workers bragged that his reasoning for getting some sort of anti virus shot was that it was fully paid for by the Teamster healthcare, it was a $600.00 shot if he had to pay for it he wouldn't have sprung for it but it was free!... there is some good reasoning that big pharma likes!
A few years ago, two of my co-workers succumbed to Pneumonia and they both had viral infections in their hearts...both almost died and their hearts are running on borrowed time. One smoked cigarettes and smoked like Mt. Pinatubo, the other one had been on heavy meds for years...one minute he acted like Roger Rabbit, and the next he was a silent brooding person that looked like he wanted to kill something...in both instances, I think that life choices put them at risk. There is no right and wrong answer, we are all big enough boys to pt our own pants on and make our own decisions, but for me "Better living Through Chemicals" was an experience that I evolved out of, not one that I want to evolve into.

Just to add about that one.
After my wife's release, I wrote a long letter with a timeline about the mistakes that were made to the administrators of the hospital.
I received an apologetic letter from the hospital, telling us they they were very sorry that I thought I was going home a widower after a harrowing night, they were revisiting their protocols and changing the way they did things...Edited as an afterthought: and neither me, nor my insurance was billed, they waived all fees..even though initially that had closed down a section thinking that initially she had TB.
At the time, this all took place my wife was an office manager at a large gastroenterology practice and he boss was a retired Bird Colonel from the medical field, he was the head administrator...."Had I received your letter, I would have been crapping bricks, you had them by the short hairs and had solid grounds for a lawsuit"
We are all human, and old sawbones doesn't always make the right decision...
Moral of the story: Talk it out with your family..when someone gets sick, and especially if they are in a situation where their judgement is dimmed, ride herd on the process, and deprive yourself, if the room has a sleepable couch, hang out there and be the eyes and ears...I lost some sleep, but kept my wife.

I don't get the shot. I'll take my chances. If you do, I respect that and there is still a chance you will get it as well. I'll play the odds.

Flu shot was mandatory in the Air Force, and I've continued getting ever since.
Last time I had the flu was 1975.
