i'm still a relatively new smoker but have had a wonderful journey through the world of tobacco. started off with borkum riff cherry cavendish.... which i liked at the time but wouldn't touch now. then i went onto lane 1Q which was my first good tobacco. next was autumn evening which was fantastic. after that i got a sample pack of tobaccos including morleys best, jamaican rum, berry good, dark cherry cavendish and nutty irishman... the dark cherry cavendish was my favourite and to me goes fantastically with red wine, so i got some more of that. then i went onto RLP-6 which wasn't bad but to me had a very chemical kinda taste to it. my latest tobacco has been Carter Hall which was recommended to me in the forums chatroom. i absolutely love it and it is my favourite tobacco so far. I have just ordered some sutliff barbados plantation and expect to get that in a day or two. along the way there have also been a few samplers including old dublin and connoisseurs choice. anyway just thought i'd share my tobacco journey so far.

You're in for a treat with Barbados Plantation. If you happen to like that one a lot, the bulk version is much cheaper...it's called Queen Anne's Revenge.

Where do you live Joffmeister?
I may be able to recommend a pipe club that will really help out in the journey...so far so good...smoke what you like, like what you smoke, but not only are there English and Aromatics, Virginia's, Burleys...and many variations...spread your wings, so many great blends, and if there is a good pipe club near you there is no substitution to the exposure and hands on advice.

I don't think there are any pipe clubs near me ! I'm actually looking forward to maybe trying some cult blood red moon in the future.

Now that you've come to enjoy Carter Hall, you may want to revisit Morely's Best...rub it out fully and smoke slowly. I think you'll find some very nice flavor there.
there's a world of tobaccos out there; I envy you the time you have to learn and sample.
Welcome to the patch,B.T.W., there's more that a little wisdom here; for my part ,I would say try all you can ,and as you learn where your favorites are ,spend wisely and cellar deep ,as prices wont go down, or at least I've not seen them go down.

This cat is in Australia...he has already hit the wall on prices. Yeah, a pipe club in Queensland is not an option from what I see. Maybe a local tobacconist cane help you start one though if he is willing to help nout.

I wonder how many of us started with cherry tobaccos? I know I did, about 30 years ago. My first pipe was a Dr Grabow from a drug store, and the tobacco was a pouch of Borkum Riff cherry. I was on the Kenai Peninsula in Alaska at the time, and this was way before computers and internet, so choices were slim and learning was sloooowww.
Then I was in a little local bar down on K-beach road, it was called The Anchor Bar, playing pool with my brother-in-law one night and I smelled the most heavenly smell. A dried up, little, old commercial fisherman was sitting up at the bar smoking a pipe, and he was smoking a blend made up in a b&m shop in Anchorage. The blend was called "Stoney's Blend", and it introduced me to a whole new world of tobacco I didnt know existed.
Btw- That shop is still open, and they still mix and sell that blend, 30 years later.

First pipe tobacco I ever had years and years ago was Middletons cherry. It steered me away from the pipe for the next few years until I revisited it.

I remember my dad smoking a cherry tobacco back in the 60's. He had an aluminum shafted pipe with a wooden bowl that screwed off. Might have been a Yello-Bole. Can't remember the brand of tobacco. I was very young then - so I only remember images. I do remember a tin that said "velvet" on it. He only smoked a pipe for a short time. He passed in 2013 and my mother last August - so I've been getting rid of their stuff and getting their property ready to sell. Went through his workshop desk last week hoping I could find that old pipe - he never got rid of anything. Didn't find it. I've been thinking about getting an old pipe like he had for my collection - and smoking some cherry tobacco in it for the memory.

I've gotta say, I'm with @ joffmeister in my love for Carter Hall. It's such a great tobacco and easily available...to YOU GUYS!!
I wish it was an OTC tobacco here. That said, I'm also loving my St. Bruno Flake, which isn't OTC, but it's easily available and the ready rubbed is available in most news agents and supermarkets.

Wilke has a couple of good cherry blends. I have the P&W Cherry Cavendish. KBV Dark Fired Cherry is good too. The OTC Cherry blends universally suck.

Gosh, after reading everything about Carter Hall, I guess I'll just have to open up my little box and give it a try. Nope I haven't tried it yet, and busy trying everything else.

Gosh, after reading everything about Carter Hall, I guess I'll just have to open up my little box and give it a try. Nope I haven't tried it yet, and busy trying everything else. Open it ...it's been around for a long time, and the reason is, it's good...plain, simple, and good. I'f you're lucky enough to get your hands on some Middelton's Apple, grab it too. I overlooked these blends for thirty years or more, thinking I was too good for "drug store tobacco " One day, a tobacco rep ,at the Kroger I worked for, marked down some close dated pouches...I got the Apple, Carter Hall and S.W.R.A. for 50 cents a pouch, even a 12 ounce bag of Smokers Pride rum and one of the cherry for 50 cents each... since then,I smoked C.H., and always have some on hand, and I'd do the same with Apple if I could find it ;it's just good old burley with some extra sweetness ,but I never tasted any apple flavor... the Smokers Pride didn't ring any bells ,but at 50 cents it doesn't have to!
