I received a letter from SP's parent, Laudisi Enterprises, outlining my 2019 purchases in order to pay sales tax to my state. I was also informed in the letter that my state was alerted re my purchases.
Welcome to the new paradigm.

Welcome to Canada minus national health care! 🖕
Snoogens!!
Seriously, looking on the bright side (pun intended) since there is no effective difference between online/catalogue sales will Pipe Folk seek out local tobacco shops? Time to open a smoke shop?

Yes, it's sad enough. But if it will make you feel better, it's merely the taxes we are obliged to pay. (That doesn't help me, btw.)

I would respond, but I am fairly certain that my respond would get me kicked off the website forum.

It's the way of the future. I ordered a pipe from Italy at a great price. Then I got the bill for the duties. The actual duty was only $2.38,but the fees from FedEx were $27. Plus tax. 🤯😒

I wonder if there is a minimum purchase to trigger such a letter..cause i think i have spent maybe 25$ there and about the same at tobacco pipes and about the same at Payless cigars and pipes...

I',m not sure if there's a trigger amount, Mike. I spent less than $200 at SP last year but still got the letter.

If memory serves, I received my first SP tax letter in 2017, so welcome to the club, papipeguy . You know what they say, "... death and taxes".

I don't think this is happening in Texas yet. We have the most popular governor of all the states. But he'll be gone in a couple of years and who knows.

Maybe not today, maybe not tomorrow, but I can envision a time when the online sales will be negligible over a brick and mortar. I am surprised that the brick and mortars haven’t made a big stink to wholesalers that sell online cheaper than the same B&M that they sell to when factoring in their overhead. I am glad that I was able to reap the bounty while I could, but I can see this train running out of track...especially when cash hungry bureaucrats realize that they have somehow been “cheated” of revenue.

In Arizona SP has charged tax for a while now. It is added to my order when I check out. I guess they will have to pay the state the money they already charged me.

You're right. Alex. Time to start opening a chain of B&Ms.

The last two orders I've gotten have it added in. It's noted as sales tax on the invoice. Used to be they had to have a B&M in state to charge sales tax but that changed last year. Welcome to the 21st century !

Welp, i can say that I must have been under the limit on my purchases to be sent a letter from SP and Tobaccopipes because neither one sent me a tax letter.Nor did payless cigars and pipes..

This is why many of us started to cellar back in 2013...don't have to worry about it for the rest of my life!

SP charges me the Texas sales tax but adds it to the total amount of the order so I pay the taxes when I pay for the order!

Never again; at least not for tobacco. Every time I order from SP I get dinged big time by customs.

I am in California. Just checked all my 2019 orders from Smokingpipes and they all charged sales tax. If SP did not charge sales tax for your home state you are supposed to self report your purchases (typically on your state tax return)and pay the appropriate tax. In California it is called a use tax. Until this tax letter stuff started it was an honor system, typically ignored by many.
