Our Lab Manager showed us a picture yesterday of her standing in front of the electron microscope they used to find the virus. Apparently, she was in China some years back and gained, unusual, clearance for a tour of the University facilities.

I spent a month in China during the summer of 2002 breaking horses. I've never been around a people so given to spitting in public. That was one of the big things about the culture I never forgot, how people were freely spitting on sidewalks, out the windows of public buses etc.
And no, lest anyone asks, they weren't spitting at the American, or in reaction to him. Everyone treated me very, very well. It was just part of their culture up there. I was in the far NE where China, NK and Russia all meet at a point. I was at that point. I've talked to NK border guards.
This is not a cultural habit that would be noticed on world news, but it seems to me that it sure would contribute to a pandemic of a very contagious virus.
Just an observation...

Your point is well made Dewayne, and it isn't steeped in racism or anything of the sort...just a commentary based on observation.
I spent quite a few years in foodservice distribution in San Francisco's Chinatown...quite often the restrooms had no hot water or soap, and the practices that I witnessed in the "back of the house" left a lot to be desired from a western cultural mindset. Think: "enough to make a skunk vomit" Even though I was in a western culture, eastern practices take place, and are overlooked by the authorities that are charged with enforcing policy.
There are Chinese restaurants that operate quite differently though...generally ones that are managed by generations removed from the old country and versed in what should pass muster.
