I just heard the news standing in a line to donate plasma. It was kind of an odd feeling at first as I doubted the news and then went to my phone. Sure enough Kobe has died in a helicopter crash. Being a fan of the NBA, in particular the Miami Heat, I appreciated Kobe's dedication and play.
LeBron James just recently surpassed Kobe for third on the all time NBA scoring list. One of Kobe's last tweets was his acknowledgement and congratulations to LeBron.

It is also sad to hear Kobe's young daughter died in the crash with him, let alone the other three persons.

Kobe was very immature in his early days as he went pro at 18. I think the worst part of passing is he was starting to give back by being active in many youth programs and other community activities.

I cannot comprehend the grief that his family must be undergoing...
I am in Vegas at Aliante waiting to head to our facility at Beatty Nevada... the wife and I were relaxing in the sports lounge when the story broke... a collective gasp.
Traveling by helicopter all these years saved him a lot of time, but when you hear one of them birds sputtering it must be the worst sound ever. iI knew a copter pilot from Nam that had a few hard landings, if memory serves me correct he said something about reversing the rotor to pull it off, but I got the impression that it was big time pucker factor and easier in theory than practice.
RIP Kobe.

Helicopters can be autorotated to a safe landing in the event of engine failure; it's equivalent to gliding an airplane. But this was a multi engine turbine helo. The odds of two turbine engines failing at once is slim. Two other things are also noteworthy: visibility was so poor that the LAPD had suspended helicopter ops, and the impact site was near the top of a ridge with the wreckage spread over a wide area on top of the terrain. This indicates the aircraft impacted the ridge top in a fairly level attitude, at cruising speed. That all adds up to a classic controlled flight into terrain accident. I don't like early speculation on accidents and so ordinarily I wouldn't... but these types of accidents always follow a certain scenario which this one seems to fit perfectly. Damn tragic.

Such a tragedy. I really don't have words left. I suppose it's sad that only the famous get reported on - things like this happen all the time across the world and nobody knows about it. My heart goes out to everyone who is grieving.

They took a left and flew right into the mountain at almost 200 mph in dense fog. RIP

I mourn But 12 Soldiers died in Afghanistan in 2019, who knows their names, I rest my case. The unnatural or premature loss of any life is sad indeed. Including the soldiers in Afghan and Kobe and his daughter (and others on board). And other tragedies of this sort. You have to hold a bit of a tear back when you know a child is involved.
