Okay - I found a place on craigslist for rent because me and wife are looking for a bigger place. Nice place- contacted the email in the ad and the guy sent me a rental questionnaire. I filled out the questionnaire and sent it back then I got a phone call later from the guy saying he has agreed to move forward with the rental however he does not live in state he lives in Tennessee. Wants me to send the security deposit walmart to walmart to secure the house and then he'll send the keys in the mail. What the hell is going on?

So then I asked him how i can be sure I'm not sending my money off for slaughter and he said he'll send me a lease but i cannot gain entry to the home until the security deposit is received?

Hard no for me. Plus, why would you rent a place without looking at it in person?

I would think, if he were legit, he would have a local agent to represent him and let people see the property; then again, the world is a different place these days. You are right to be leery.

First step is to look up the address on the County Assessors website and see if he is listed as the owner.
People run that scam all the time and rent you a home they don't own. Or, rent you a home they lived in but it is now in foreclosure with the bank.
Craigslist is full of Real Estate scams. You are better off getting a Realtor and have them send you a list of rental properties. The owner pays so it should be free to you.

Well there are loads of pictures of the inside and I also looked through the windows and it is nice. However I looked on the county accessors website as directed and the owner is completely different from who I've been talking to. Thanks for the advice guys. I'm out of this entirely Haha.

It's too easy to pull photos of a house off of a Zillow listing, then mosey on over to Craigslist, post them up as a house for rent and scam away.

Seen this one and almost fell for it. The rent was too god to be true so I looked into it. The guy told us to go ahead and look around the property on our own. Could not go inside of course.
We moved on as well, Im sure that was the same scam

Very true. Real rent for the house on Zillow is 300$ more.

I just walked away from a sale by owner deal on a big lot with a well and septic in place that went south. I mentioned I would like to transfer title at a local lawyers office after a proper contract and bill of sale was drawn up. Just keep looking and you will find something that will nice and safe as well as inexpensive to rent.

Craigslist is the wild wild west. I would use Air B&B.

RUN AWAY! I have known several who have gotten burned by this kind of thing. You’d have a better chance of getting a free tin of aged Penzance from someone here, than that deal being legit

Definite scam.
Please, turn it over to the po-po! OK, I have no business calling law enforcement that, but if you can get those m-f'ers caught, you'd be doing others a favor.

Thanks for all the advice. Seeing the womans name on the county assessor site really did it for me though I could smell something fishy from the start. I flagged the ad on craigslist but not much of one to deal with the law.

I have seen the same scam for land vehicles, boats etc. Rule of thumb if the price looks like an incredible deal I pass. If one wishes to take the chance and the seller wants to make an out of state deal or cannot meet, close the door immediately.
The scammers can be from other countries and/or hard to trace. Typically the local police are not going to pursue such culprits. I would contact Craigslist and report the listing to shut it down in order that no one else falls for the trap.

Just flag it on CL and they will take it down. Don't waste the polices time (imho).

You did the right thing on this. I'm glad you had the sense to question it. Some others don't fare so well.

It is amazing how many at first glance, legitimate looking emails from Chase Bank, Paypal, etc...that are nothing but scams...Even if only one out if a hundred takes the bait it is too much., the email addresss is the first clue...never ever click on any of the nonsense, in this case logging into my Paypal account, not through the link these knuckleheads offer, is the only way to go.

I have on good faith that all banks route their email through the Nigerian embassy and that the US embassy there is protecting my information and safeguarding my transactions.

Last month via Craigslist (local pickup) I bought 5 sealed 10+year old 100g tins of Christmas Cheer for $60 CAD ($45 USD) each.
