Hoping to get your ideas on keeping pipes in a sealed plastic container, like you might store cigars. Trying to keep the smell down because I know the better half is gonna complain. Thanks

I think that the pipes need to be out in the air. I have a hundred pipes on display in cabinets and pipe racks and there was no noticeable smell when we came home from a 10 day trip.

It's usually the pipe cleaners and ashtray that smell not the pipes. I have pipes sitting all over the house but it's the ashtray with the dirty pipe cleaners that I smell.

Kind of a low budget option, and depending on how many, size, shape etc.. I used cardboard 18pk egg carton that I cut the top off of and store my cobs bowl down alternating with stem to center. It is a good shape, organized within the container, probably wicks some moisture as well, easy to track a rotation if you're into that, and easy to acquire. I kept a couple of briars mixed in there as well with no notable ill affects. I then stored this in a hard foam lined metal suitcase (for camera equipment I think) under the bed. I haven't received any comments on smell and it stays easily accessible.
I am not a seasoned professional just a creative thinker, hope this helps.

A clothespin for your wife’s nose would be the cheapest option. 😉

I've taken to just letting the pipe air out for 15-20 minutes outside before bringing it it. Seems to work like a charm.

I used to have that problem when I smoked aros and burley based blends. After I started straight all virginias all I get now is dry fine ash at the end of each bowl and no residual aroma from my pipes. I store most of my pipes ( I have over 100) in racks and some two desk drawers. One the most important things to remeber pipe cleaners are a pipes best friend!

Thanks for the suggestions everybody. She hasn’t said anything yet maybe she won’t. I think getting rid of the used pope cleaners will hel a lot.

Regarding the dirty pipe cleaners. Just don’t throw them in the kitchen trash, unless you take it out daily. I take mine outside to the trash when I let the dogs out.’ But if it’s going to be awhile, I throw them in a used milk or soda bottle with a screw cap or a zip lock bag. As others have said they are usually the culprit.

I have the advantage of having a mancave with an exhaust fan... that being said, I do run a pipe cleaner through each pipe (I usueally smoke several per night) and wipe the bowl out with a paper towel after they cool down. I dump my trash cans frequently. Not to mention a little fabreeze in the cave weekly....
I too would be worried about keepin my briars in a sealed container...

I've noticed that pipes seem to smell like an ashtray to me. I have mine in a plastic box now. There's no smell coming from that.

I put my pipes in couple large cedar lined humidors with a couple of humidicant packs inside to keep things dry. No smell.

But then again, I'm not sure I can distinguish whether or not a smell has locked in on them. Plus, I smoke cobs more often than any other, so perhaps the 'locking in' is lesser since ghosting is lesser with a cob.

I store mine in their racks. Just use pipe cleaners religiously and you should be fine.

I've never noticed any odors with any of my pipes. I have noticed on old pipes that haven't been smoked in years, like those sitting in antique stores, get this smell to them, but I think it is pleasant. Now used pipe cleaners, on the other hand, can smell like the deepest pits of Sheol, even after one use. Just one of those boogers can smell like the bottoms of a hunert ashtrays.

My understanding is direct sunlight accelerates the degradation of vulcanite stems. That is a problem in my house where there is sunshine everywhere at some time of the day.
But I did find a hall way where I have a small pipe rack.
Other than avoiding direct sunlight, I don't think there is anything wrong with pipes in racks out in the open. I agree that ash trays seem to contribute much more to any odors, than does pipes on a desk or on the wall.
My one experience with pipe smell in the house was a visiting neighbor who said something. Well she said something to a friend of hers who then wanted to date "the pipe smoker across the road", and so just saying an odor may have some advantage.

Mine are in a rack, air & dry out & no odor at all. My ashtrays..different story. Specially cigar butts the next day. Dump them & odor gone. Had a Lady come into our house today & commented on how good our house smelled. I grinned. Wife accepted the compliment.
