Last summer when I was just starting to understand a little and appreciate a lot, I lost my taste for smoking. Below is a link to the thread I created when this happened and I concluded that it had something to do with the meds and my taste would come back. It hasn't! I've only smoked a few cigars and a few pipes since then and it just hasn't been enjoyable. I can still grab the awesome flavors and sensations occasionally but they are surrounded by the taste of a wet ashtray.
I hope someone may have some suggestions as I hate to think that all of my cigars, pipes, and tobacco are just sitting there.....mocking me

Send one of your pipes and some of your tobacco to a friend and have them see if it is the pipe or you? Maybe a new set of eyes and taste buds can figure out what is going on?

I hate to think that all of my cigars, pipes, and tobacco are just sitting there.....mocking me You know they are, just sitting there all smug and flavorful. 😉 Jk. That’s a tough one, wish I had something better than a smart arse response. I would think if its not the meds than look to your diet. Hope you figure that one out Jeff, sounds like a drag. No pun intended.

Well if your pipe tastes like an ashtray I would give it a good cleaning and let it set for a day and try it the next and see if anything has changed. Anything is worth a try at this point I reckon.

Yup, long shot. If I had to guess I would say that someone who wanted you to stop smoking sprayed "ash tray scent" car freshener all over your tobaccos.

Strange indeed...I wonder if it might be the house, or the air within the house...have you tried a favorite pipe and blend ,or blends of tobacco, while in other suroundings???
Mold or some such thing in the duct work of your home might effect your taste buds.
whatever you do, don't go nutts and sell off your goodies...in years to come ,you'll look back and kick yourself!!

Ah yes, could definitely be mold in the ductwork. I could sell you a Reme Halo and some UV lights. Joking aside, if you haven't already, then try to rule out different variables. Are you still on those medications? If not, could they have altered body chemistry? Is changes in taste a known side affect of them?

Are you still taking the meds you started in the last thread. Some, like Lunesta, never stop making all tobacco products taste like hippo droppings.

For what it's worth, I don't get any of the tastes that people sense. I don't taste anything at all when I smoke...but my enjoyment comes from the activity itself and the smells as I exhale.
Maybe you can take some pleasure in that.

Maybe you can take some pleasure in that. That's kinda how I am to. I don't usually notice things like "nutty toast with hints of moss". More like good smoke and bad smoke, maybe tangy or creamy at very best. If I go hunting for more "flavor" I wind up with tongue made of scorched jerky for a few days. Have you tried using Biotene before and after having a smoke? Could be that the meds, or climate, or a laundry list of other things, are causing your mouth to dry out just enough to have an impact on your taste buds. The Biotene can help a lot, and the mint flavor just before smoking will act as a palette cleanser. Might be worth a shot anyhow.

I am not on the meds anymore, it was prednisone. I also try smoking at my cabin with the same results. I can't wait until spring to be able to try smoking outdoors. I wish I could eliminate the possibility of mold in my ductwork but I live in an old farmhouse I remodeled and there is just too much dampness to remediate. Since I don't spend much time smoking, I am going to clean every one of my pipes a few at a time and see what happens. I can't clean my cigars I honestly feel bad for those of you who can't taste the deliciousness that I "used to taste"

Since I am going to clean all of my pipes, I would like your input; salt or cotton balls?
During the restoration I did with a few dozen pipes I felt that salt pulled more out of the stummel but I would like to hear from those who know more than I do.
I plan to clean the shank and stem well, then either salt or cotton balls, and then try them again.

I tried both, but settled on cotton balls...I've heard that salt can crack the briar, but I'm not sure how true that is. Cotton balls work grand though, so I figured, why take the risk?

The foundation of taste is not in the mouth or the taste buds, its actually in the nose. Thats why you can hold your nose and swallow nasty tasting medicine. Have there been any new sinus/nose issues, allergies or allergy medicines recently?
Just a thought

I am going through the ame thing, last dose a week and a half ago. Screwed up my taste for everything, didn't even car that much if I ate or not. Just my opinion. Just starting to get better. (Taste)

Just a thought That's a good point and I am actually currently dealing with allergies but I don't think that's the issue. It has been going on since July.
I will say this, I am aggressively cleaning my pipes a few at a time and I smoked a couple bowls last night with a new pipe and it was better.
It's funny, I bought a bunch of estate pipes and cleaned them thoroughly but didn't think to clean my own
Hopefully, I can ease my way back into this theraputic hobby!

I will say I've noticed drastic taste differences in the same combination of pipe and tobacco blend, from week to week, and I think it mostly comes down to allergies / congestion for me.
Probably my favorite tobacco flavors are sour, funky, incensy notes from good orientals, and I always taste them best in my nose. Especially with a retrohale, but even with normal puffing.
So congestion will obviously affect my sense of smell, and therefore the perception of taste, in my nose. I also noticed in the fall when I was taking one of those steroid nasal sprays for allergies, that it made the problem worse. I mean, I could breathe fine so that was nice... but I couldn't smell or taste as well.
So much of this has to be personal, regarding your own senses and how they interact with the flavors you're trying to tease out of your favorite blends. I think something like bready Virginia sweetness is experienced a different way than oriental sourness, and I'll bet my allergies affect me differently than yours do you. So it's probably all about experimenting until you find what works well for you.
But I'll bet a constant for all of us is the fact that medicines as well as allergies will affect your taste and smell. Good luck and I hope you find what works!

I have experienced the wildly varying tastes from allergies or general congestion but this is different. Everything tasted like a wet ash tray.
I think I had two things working against me. First was the meds, and then I am finding that I do a much better job of cleaning pipes I restore than I do my own.....I am actively fixing that!

I miss smoking too.
I have been sequestered into the cab of trucks with people that do not smoke...I have been dipping away, and to the nature of the business that I am working in I get it. In two weeks I am getting cut loose, and it is Katie bar the door on smoking.

Welp, I have discovered a few things. I love how adversity can make us wiser
There is no question that the meds caused an issue but in the process of trying to get back to smoking I have come to realize that I hadn't been caring for my own pipes as well as I should.
When I bought estate pipes which I would re-sell, I took the time to clean "everything" out of them and then sanitize with salt or cotton balls.
With my own pipes I would simply put a tissue in the bowl and pipe cleaner in the stem and let it sit for a while and then pull them both and put the pipe back on the rack. Over the last few days I took a real close look at my culprit pipes and found that even though I had de-ghosted them with cotton balls, there was still a thick layer of hardened black goo in them. I am now cleaning every one of my pipes, a few at a time, as if I were selling it to a stranger and I have already noticed a difference!
Yee-haw! Back to PAD and TAD
