These guys. I used to be terribly afraid of snakes, like Indiana Jones afraid. Had a few close calls with them as a kid, so I decided it was time overcome that fear. What better way to do that than to learn to care for one, right? Well, one turned into two because I realized that they are actually awesome pets and once trust is developed, they can be a lot of fun. Plus, with the help of some more experienced owners, I learned the ins and out of their care pretty quick and found that they are easy to care for. Any other snakekeepers in the Patch?

Although I currently do not have any, I have kept them in the past and most species are very sweet once tame. Almost bought a few at Repticon last month.

I've had Sushi, my ball python, for a year now, and Doc, my boa, for about 10 months. When I brought him home from the breeder, he was about the size of a long pencil. Climbed right up my arm and coiled up on top of my head. Goofy as hell.

I had a small pet coral snake until the Scoutmaster found out. I was with friends at one of their sisters on the airbase in San Antonio. We were in sleeping bags on the floor. I woke up to some confusion. Sister said, "y'all might want to stay in your sleeping bags, one of Neil's cobras got out"! If you get a chance be sure to stay at the Outback Oasis and Snake Farm in historic Sanderson, Texas. It's like a whole 'nuther country!

Was station at Fort Sam Houston for a few years. I will most definitely look into the snake farm though, that sounds like my kind of trip right there.

Great in the spring and they have an annual roundup of in the July, but it's hotter than Central Arkansas in the summer. šš¤ texashighways.com/things-to-do/slither-into-the-outback-oasis-motel-for-a-lesson-in-the-snakes-of-west-texas/

I also had a ball (royal) python and a boa constrictor.
The boas are beautiful snakes and so docile. Mine was simply a joy to have. He never once struck at me and was a champion eater.
Your boa looks beautiful, Jason. It's the smaller of the different types of boa which will probably do you well. Mine was the same but was still over 8ft long and strong.

AWESOME!! I have and breed Kenyan Sand boas Very cool. KSB and Short-Tailed Python are the two other species I would love to own some day. Gotta be soon though. I'm already closing in on 40, and I don't want my snakes outliving me, the idea of a 20-30 year old snake having to change owners because I kicked the bucket doesn't sit well with me.

Humorously, both of these boys have tagged me once each, both accidental food responses with immediate release (and a hilarious "WTF, that wasn't a rat" look) but at their sizes, the damage done was so small, it made my cats looks deadly. Yeah, Doc is boa imperator, my guess is that he will wind up somewhere in the 6-7 range, but even 8 would still be manageable. I am waiting for my tax return so I can get him moved into a PVC enclosure with a radiant heat panel. Sushi got his last year. That frees up one enclosure...

I had a Ball Python for about 10 years, I had to move and the place was not snake friendly. He, "Krodos" went to a lady that I know that had several other snakes. I love the animals, poisonous or non. I dont currently own any, but I rescue and relocate native ones whenever I get the chance. Beautiful animals you have there

I got to handle a Black Cobra once while in Hays City, Kansas.
That experience got me over a fear of snakes and now I enjoy seeing them in the wild. I try not to step on any, particularly our Prairie Rattlers.
As for pets, I long for a Gator in my own pond. Too cold here for them but they make a nice lawn ornament. They convey a message: "Stay off my Lawn".

Those are beautiful. I've never kept a snake (well other than short term garter snake pets as a kid) but always liked them.
What I don't like are spiders. It's not an incapacitating phobia, and I respect them as interesting and necessary critters... I just prefer they be interesting a certain distance away from me...

I have had several snakes. My first was a corn snake, also called a red rat snake. He got pretty big, about five feet long. Kept a bull snake for a while, but released him back into the wild. Had a ball python named Kaa for many years. He was a rescue. Found out doors in a suburban environment in Colorado. Not sure what he would have done when the cold weather came. I sometimes will pick up wild snakes if they seem ok with it. I enjoy observing all the rattlesnakes I run across when desert rockhounding too. I have found that hiking with a copper tipped staff lets them know I am there. Also is reassuring to have in your hand in snake country. Amazing critters.

Iām happy for all of you folks who have found satisfaction in keeping snakes, but, no, just no. Not no, but Iād rather go to China and lick door knobs.
For me it was a huge personal moment of growth to refrain from killing non-venomous snakes. And, then the unthinkable happened, I even left the venomous ones breathing as long as they werenāt around the āhomesteadā.
No need for applause, I know, Iām a great person. :-)

Beautiful creatures, Jason ... congrats on facing that fear! I had a roommate that kept Ball Pythons and I loved them but never got my own ... went with a Bearded Dragon instead.

We never had a snake as a pet as adults, but my son wanted a lizard. He picked a Savanah Monitor and we had it about 3 years, until it tried to eat his hand the sixth time. We donated it to the Houston zoo. He named it Smaug, of course and they kept the name. We saw him about 10 years later and he was doing fine. We were protected by the double layers of bullet proof glass.

We're spoilt here. No snakes, no poisonous spiders or insects, no scorpions, no bears or other wild animals that could kill you. Do you know what St Patrick said when he was driving the snakes out of Ireland? Are you alright there in the back?

I love red tail boas and hopefully I can have another one at some point in the future. Right now my only weird pet is a curly hair tarantula.

I did have a pet King snake that lived in my old wash shed, didnāt need the cats then, mice and other bad snakes didnāt come around. Sorry to hear about that Brad, Kings are great snakes to have around the property. For anyone reading who didn't know, Kingsnakes actually eat other snakes, as well as rodents and all of the other normal stuff, so they do a fantastic job of keeping your yard free of the more dangerous snakes.
