You may know that Charles Portis, author of True Grit amongst other books has departed for the Territories Beyond. He was 86. A native of the Arkansas he wrote so well about. His career began as a Newspaperman, first in his home state and then in NYC for the old NY Herald Tribune. One day, he announced he was returning to live in a shack and write books. That he did. Elusive, private and remote, he never did an author interview. He never married except, perhaps, to Mattie Ross.
RIP, sir.

I wasn't aware of his death. I have been meaning to read some of his work. This should get me off the dime.

Incredibly expensive, some of his books in paperback are listed on Alibris and Amazon for $900. His hardback editions run $45 to $85. If you see his books for less at a used store, grab them.

Prefer a hardback book, printed on paper.

Got Norwood on the E Machine, been reading Anton Myere, Once an Eagle, so true and so sad in the end. Bought The Last Convertible , no E edition, paperback, just like old times.

Didn't know him. I do enjoy Great American Novels though so I'll pick up some of these on Kindle.
Edit: $2.39 for True Grit... think I got my next evening read!

True Grit was widely distributed and that book can be found with Earthly prices. His other novels, in the print format, seem to be scarce and therefore priced high. You should enjoy reading True Grit., it fits your requirements!!
