I have tried this MacArthur pipe a few times and it has always resulted in a dump of 90% of what I put in it. And it can hold a LOT of tobacco, it's 9" long 3 3/4" tall.
Is there a method to smoking this thing or is it doomed to be a novelty?

I have a very tall bowl briar with a small diameter opening. It sings with Virginia's.
I don't pack it real tight. After about my second tamp I will stir the ashes on top and dump them out. I continue to do this throughout the smoke.
Good luck.

I smoke mine 1-2 times a month. I usually pack it with a loose Virginia or burley blend. I tamp it down just a bit and light it up. 😀

I smoked mine regularly with no problems. I don't have any suggestions. I just packed it normally. I was smoking a standard blend, 1Q or the equivalent. I wouldn't get too fancy.

The burn mark on the stem halfway up bumfuzzles me, it’s that hot up to there? Restriction somewhere? Smokes hot?

You might need one of those BBQ lighters to be able to get the flame far enough down the bowl.

I just smoked a bowl of BB Alamo in my MacArthur and it went just fine. I just wouldn't try any troublesome blends.

Mine's easier to smoke with matches - I can stick the burning end down into the bowl, with a lighter I'm trying to suck the flame down from the top.

You know that MacArthur used this pipe as a prop, a gimmick. It was part of his carefully developed image. He would light up in he was going to be on camera. No pictures, no pipe. I doubt that he ever smoked a whole bowl and I understand that he only filled it half full. The General is a better pipe all around.

For a big pipe the general is perfect.
