I have a Samsung Galaxy S-6 and Verizon/Samsung will no longer update it so it is developing issues. I despise buying a new phone because the sales person can NEVER make the new phone work properly, my emails, pictures, text messages are all messed up. I am a very basic user but I rely heavily on email and my contacts for my business and while I know it's all stored "in the cloud" they can never get the data to a new phone in a way that I can use it efficiently.
I refuse to spend $500 - $1000 on a new phone!
Does anyone know if this phone can be upgraded beyond the 7.0 software it currently runs on? Or, is there a clean way to move to a newer phone without either spending $700 or $40 per month for a new phone which will work with newer software?

I had to get a new phone recently, a basic pay as you go flip phone, but still had to go through hell just to make a phone call and discovered that if you pick up the damn thing incorrectly you wind up muting the ringer...what a PIA.

Sadly I believe this is EXACTLY what the manufacturer of the phone wants to happen so you must buy a new phone. Failure is in the making I'm afraid and that's what ALL big business is about, to make more money. I am so glad I never got into the big electronics age too deeply, it not only saves me money but, the stress that those things bring............ and I can drive my truck, walk through a market and even go to the can without having a cellphone stuck to my face.

I’m the worst guy to give computer advice, the only thing I know is sometimes you have too many apps on phone, clearing them, like emptying your trash can so you can put more 💩in it . Sean or Ron chime in on this.

Funny story. The last time I bought a new phone it was at Best Buy and the sales rep and I discussed all sorts of things while she was trying to "sell me". We developed a bit of a bond while laughing at all the crap I'd been through. When I told her that the last couple times I bought a phone, things like email and texting wouldn't work, she laughed at me rather insultingly and said "it will work, I assure you". I said "okay, I have a baseball bat in my car and if it doesn't work I am going to get the bat and smash the new phone right here on the counter so hang on to my old phone". She giggled. An hour and half later nobody could make my new phone work and she was nervous because there were other people waiting and she knew I wasn't going to leave until it was fixed. I said "I'll be right back", she perked up and said "yeah go do some shopping and I will work on it" I said "nope, I'm going to go get the bat". Another 30 minutes later with Samsung tech support and my ISP who provides my email addresses, they finally got it to work.

My son is a cellphone wizard and has worked for several carriers, mostly Verizon stores. Frankly, he is overly obsessed with cell phones even though he no longer works for cell phone companies... he has always handled our transfers without a hitch.
He has told us stories about rank incompetence in some stores though, not uncommon.
I did my last transfer from an Iphone 7plus to an Iphone 11, Apple makes it very easy.

You are so right Charlie, first IPHONE I bought was not for me but the wife, she is not technically astute so she gave me the phone and took my flip phone, didn’t know crap about email, texting, etc, went to the phone store and Lord the imcompetence, left head buzzing. Called my Son and he walked me thru email and texting. Been having an IPHONE ever since.

Jeff,
My son said feel free to call him... with Android based phone if Verizon is your carrier, you download the Verizon content transfer app after backing up your Google account if you use that. Google is coming out with the Pixel 4A, and he said that should result in the 3A being a phone packed with features at a low price.
If you have an AT&T phone or some of the other carriers he said that they are notorious for screwing things up... I will PM you his phone number, call him if you want.

You dont have to get the best and brightest. I have been using the S7 edge because it give me 24 hours of charge time. Just go get a 7 and ignore the 9 and 10 series. You shoud be abe to get a S7 or S7 Edge for next to nothing (and it's a great phone).

I had an S7 and it was a rock solid phone, the question about going with that phone when triggering an upgrade from an unsupported previous phone, one has to ask how long will Samsung support the S7 into the future?
As Ron said, they are in the phone selling business.

The first thing to buy after a new phone is an Otterbox defender case... it bulks up the size of the phone, but it sure saves you from cussing.

We have been with Verizon for years. Both the wife and I are on our second Google phones and all of the programs and data transferred from the old phone to the new one without any problems. It takes a little time, but by the next day everything is there.

You know what is the GREATEST phone ever and will NEVER give you a problem, no dropped calls, no outages, and will never run low on power or a dead battery? And no matter what storm takes your power out, it's ALWAYS on.
Yes! It's a REAL TELEPHONE and has tested the time over eons and still works when ever you need it.........a landline. We never had cell phones back when and NEVER needed them........not until BIG BUSINESS decided we did so they could line their pockets with MORE money!
And BTW this is not a photo taken off the web, this is one of my phones.
I think EVERYONE that owns a cellphone should read "The Rape of Ma Bell" and it'll give you just a little insight to what our glorious Government has done for us and how much it's tied to Big Business and how it's doing it's bidding.

I'm not surprised one bit sir, no one wants to work too hard anymore to make things right until there forced to, there interests are making money not happy customers. And if you do find one that will do what they should ya better hang onto them cause there as rare as hens teeth.

It's funny Ron, While a "land line" is rock solid, it's just a short matter of time until a phone "line" is no longer available. I have been an independent consultant in the telecommunications industry for 23 years and carriers are fighting tooth and nail to eliminate all copper phone lines because they take up so much space in the Central Offices. AT&T filed a petition, and was given permission by the FCC, to eliminate copper about 8-10 years ago. They received so much backlash because of old copper phone lines in elevators and alarm panels that they had to agree to continue to offer them. But it won't be long.

Pixel 3a is what I would probably the best bang for the buck and it will stay up to date faster than the other manufacturers. If you want to get a used older phone check out swappa.

I finall gave mine up 2 months ago, got rid of internet service over the copper line, AT&T was chargeing me top price for the fastest service which was 💩 in a rural area, Ron to you and this is said in partial jest, Shape Up or Ship Out, it ain’t gonna change, the world is not like you and I remember it or want it. Character in most places, honor means 💩 in most places. People talk in circles, no straight talk anymore. The world has changed, it ain’t our time anymore.

I think Ron is right... Phone companies want you to upgrade. If you do, even to a slightly newer version, your emails etc shouldn't be an issue in transporting. I've never had an issue.
I wish I lived closer to you to be able to help my friends out.

If you can "root" the phone, then you can put the latest version of the Android OS on it. After several decades of bad experience we finally dumped Verizon and Samsung phones. The pre-loaded crap they put on them causes trouble from the start. If you can do a clean up on your older phone it should work like it did when it was new. I still use a Note 3 with an El Cheapo sim for navigation and weather on the trike. We spend so much time on our phones that we both upgraded to the One Plus 7 Pro a few months ago and haven't had any regrets. If you only need phone. Email and text, try a Tracfone from Walmart.

My son was evangelistic about that years ago and did so with dozens of phones as he preached about all of the bloatware that slowed the phones down....the problem is that his rooting experiments often ended up in losing basic functions on the phone and stability issues...he quietly left that evangelistic camp...he may still root phones, he just doesn't talk about it anymore, I think that he found out that it was a dead end.

The one plus 7 pro, at the end of the article it gets high praises. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/OnePlus_7My calling plan is Pageplus cellular plan $54.00 for unlimited text and data, they use Verizon services so it is stable, Pageplus is part of Tracfone, and customer service is non existent, but it is not been needed.

I've used iPhone now for quite a number of years. After switching from Blackberry, I've never left. If Apple creates an OS version that can't be supported by an older phone, it just won't update to the newer OS version. The only downside is that there are some newer apps you can't run. But if basic phone service is what you want you can use it for decades.
