But hey, I've asked a lot of dumb questions before
In getting back into pipe smoking I am taking a little different angle this time. I am trying to smoke blend types rather than various tobacco simply because of high review status.
Yesterday I decided I was going to try some Virginia Perique. I opened a tin of Viprati and noticed a smell I could only describe as dog poop. I then opened a tin of Escudo and noticed the parfum de poop again. I went outside and did a project and came back a couple hours later and smelled them both again......same hint of dog poop. But I decided to try the Escudo and after I dumped a bit on a paper plate and let it dry for 30 minutes there was nothing but the sweet smell of ripe tobacco.
Where does this pungent smell I am equating to dog poop come from and what is it?
BTW, I enjoyed the Escudo

It comes from Escudo and other vapers. It's really the perique, nasty stuff. The Virginias taste like hot air to me, and the perique is like steaming baby excrement.

I've never gotten that smell from either of those tobaccos. Everyone's body chemistry is a little different. Or... Maybe your dog like Escudo as well and you didn't know it.

The perique is fermented, most likely that is what you're smelling.

So that "project" that you did outside? I'm guessing you were out smelling dog poop? For comparative purposes only, of course. Seriously, I've never had the dog poop experience with either Viprati or Escudo. Only the nose knows where it goes.

I'd like to say I sampled all the varieties in the neighborhood to try to narrow it down to a breed......but no......I cleaned out my shed

It's very common not to like something,or have a chemical reaction so that you can't smoke it..I for example can't smoke straight Virginia, and I don't like the taste of Perique..On the other hand I love Latakia..It's different for different folks...That old saying..Smoke what you like.

The perique is fermented, most likely that is what you're smelling. That is probably it, I have tins of straight Perique, and they give off a fermented smell, I have never associated it with dog doo though.

Perique is an acquired taste. For my part, I don't like it and smoke very little that has Perique. But sometimes it slips through. Dang dog poop.

I'm sure that's true. It was funny because after sitting out for 20 minutes, spread on a paper plate to dry, the smell was very pleasant but in the tin, it was extremely pungent.
And I liked the smoke

As a Escudo aficionado I can tell you it does not smell like dog poop, maybe you have some on your feet or around the vicinity. And as for Ron, you've GOT to be doing something wrong my friend. Escudo was the first tobacco I really liked and have stuck with it ever since, even after those nimrods changed the blend. I even have a jar of blending Perique and in no way does it smell like Poop and sir, I know what dog poop smells like, having a few dogs before I've stepped in it enough. So if it still smells of dog poop you gotta change your dogs diet.

I bought a good supply of Escudo when I first started smoking the pipe again about 7? years ago. It is in a jar and I take some out once a year to see if it is still disgusting. It's been over a year now, but I just can't bring myself to do it. I like English blends, and the varients of the same, Orientals, Presbyterian, English crossovers aros, dark fired whatever. I do like PS Deluxe rolls, and especially Davidoff Deluxe Medallions. Anything that doesn't have perique at more than the least condiment level. And I also can't stand Lakeland blends. SWRA and the like is very nice. Captain Black Royal is a favorite. And everything I have tried from Wilke is fantastic. But Escudo is the third worst tobacco I have tried, after Rum Twist and 1792.

Ron, I'm sorry I dredged up such nasty memories! I think it would be only fair of me to take that jar off your hands so you never have to experience the trauma again of having to open it, smell it, try it, and slam the lid back on.
I realize how traumatizing something like that can be

I am hanging on to the jars in case my tastes change. It happens. I probably have a couple of tins in the cellar, just in case.

I don't like lakelands, nor do I like 1792, I've not tried Escudo, But I have smoked a great amount of perique and enjoy it a few time each week. The aroma reminds me of the rotting fruit at the base of our plum trees back home. As a dog owner, I found it very easy to lay my hands on some dog poop, in fact ,as the owner of two dogs ,it's fair to say that I can find a nice blend of dog poop with very little trouble at all. with all this in mind I went out to the backyard ,flashlight in hand, and in no time I put together what I feel is a very good example of a dog poop blend{we'll call it K-9}and returned to my "spill tray" on the kitchen table. Even with some dry time I found it was not so easy to rub out ,but ,with some extra work I managed to work out enough to fill a bowl...my first thought was that this might be the perfect blend to add some color to my Meer, but thank goodness I remembered an old pot{ a hickock I think } with a broken shank and an oddball stem that seemed a better fit. Not trusting my Zippo for the task, I used a wood match for the charring light that made my eyes water a bit...a light tamp and another match, and I was off to a running start...at about 1/3rd into the bowl my began to complain about the room note, and this alone is enough to confirm that K-9 is in no way akin to Perique...my wife is such a fan of perique that it's all I can do to keep her out of my VooDoo Queen. Stone ; if you mail me some of your tobacco ,I'll do a side by side test , or I'll gladly mail you a sample of K-9...HOPE THIS HELPS!

If you smoke Sutliff's Elizabethan/Victorian Match, you'll never open another tin of Escudo.
